"Thought leader."

What comes to mind when you hear that?

A know-it-all?

A viral TED Talk speaker?

Something you could never be?

In this episode, we’re breaking down that phrase and rebuilding it with purpose. And who better to help us reframe thought leadership than Carol Cox, the founder and CEO of Speaking Your Brand® and one of the original voices who pushed me to launch this very podcast!

Carol is back on the mic (you may remember her from Episode 54), and she’s bringing clarity, conviction, and a serious invitation to elevate how you show up and speak up.

💡 In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • What thought leadership really means and why you might already be doing it
  • The different “packages” your thought leadership can take

Does weaving storytelling into your work feel like a lot?

Like a heavy lift, you don’t always have time or energy for?

What if I told you there’s a shortcut?

A storytelling tool that’s faster, flexible, and just as powerful in most situations?

Spoiler alert: it’s the analogy.

In this episode of Reframe to Create, we’re building your Analogy Bank.

I can become your go-to collection of comparisons, metaphors, and visual word-pictures that help you easily explain complex ideas and connect with your audience instantly.

Analogies are the bridge.

They’re the glasses and flashlight you whip out in that dim restaurant so you can finally read the menu. (Can anyone relate?) 😩

They take the foggy and make it crystal clear.

And here’s the good news: you don’t need to be a poet to use them well.

You just need to start noticing them, collecting them, and pulling them out when it counts.

In this episode, I’ll show you:

  • Why analogies are your communication superpower
  • How to build your own Analogy Bank step-by-step
  • A few of my favorite analogy examples that you can use

If Episode 88 helped you build your Story Bank, this one is your next move.

Grab your notebook.

It’s Analogy Time!

Sure, you can tell your story. But what happens when you're not in the room?

Are people sharing a story about you that doesn’t quite fit?

I bet you can see it now.

There’s someone who believes in you. They love what you create. They want to advocate for you. But when the moment comes to share your story? They fumble. They either say nothing… or say the wrong thing.

Now you’re getting opportunities that sound nothing like you—or worse, no opportunities at all.

Yikes!

In this episode, I show you how to fix that.

I walk you through how to equip your biggest fans to tell your story in the right way, to the right people, in the right rooms.

The key? A simple tool called the ABT Framework (And, But, Therefore)—which I first learned from Park Howell back in Episode 101.

When you use it well, your personal brand doesn’t just sit quietly waiting for the next introduction—it starts working for you, everywhere.

🔑 In This Episode, You’ll Learn:

  • Why it’s not enough to just tell your own story
  • The real risk of letting others freestyle your narrative
  • How to use the ABT Framework to shape your personal brand story
  • A practical four-question exercise to map your story clearly
  • The power of helping others find opportunities on your behalf

In the end, you’ll learn how to make your story travel to places you haven’t been and get the right opportunities back to you.

Creating isn’t just about what you make…it’s about who you become.

We’re back with the brilliant Nana Brew-Hammond for her second visit to Reframe to Create, and this time, it’s a full-circle moment.

In Episode 21, Nana shared “How to Stay Committed to an Imperfect Creating Journey.”

And in this episode, we see how that commitment has blossomed.

Nana walks us through the very different experiences she had while writing her two latest books:

✨ Blue– a children’s picture book that dives into the rich history of a single color ✨ My Parents’ Marriage – an adult novel that explores the complex dynamics of family, love, and identity.

The process of creating each of these works taught Nana different things. And in this conversation, she shares two key lessons she learned along the way.

Lessons about transformation, flexibility, and what it really means to grow alongside your work.

Honestly? This conversation lit something in me. It reminded me that no matter how smooth or bumpy the road, the journey itself is doing something deep and lasting in us.

If you want to experience the joy and power of Nana’s work, you can check out both books at nanabrewhammond.com.

You’ll be glad you did.

About my guest: Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond is an American-Ghanaian writer of novels, short stories and a poet.

In 2014 she was chosen as one of 39 of Sub-Saharan Africa's most promising writers under the age of 40, showcased in the Africa39 project. Nana has been featured on MSNBC, NY1, SaharaTV, ARISE TV, and has been published in Ebony Magazine.

Her latest novel for adult readers, My Parents’ Marriage, was featured in The New York Times Book Review’s July 7, 2024 “...Also Out Now” column, Minneapolis Star Tribune, Booklist, and more. The author Melissa Rivero called it “a propulsive read that will take hold of you with its honesty, determination, and heart,” while the author Vanessa Walters described it as “an arrestingly evovative story…which dismantles immigrant clichés.

Her children’s picture book BLUE: A history of the Color as Deep as the Sea and as Wide as the Sky, illustrated by Caldecott Honor artist Daniel Minter, was named among the best of 2022 by NPR, New York Public Library, Chicago Public Library, Kirkus Reviews, The Center for the Study of Multicultural Literature, Bank Street College of Education, and more. BLUE is on the 2023-2024 Texas Bluebonnet Master List; it has been honored with the NCTE Orbis Pictus Award® recognizing excellence in writing of non-fiction for children; and it is an NAACP Image Award Nominee for Outstanding Literature for Chidlren. It was named to the American Libary Association’s 2023 Notable Children’s Books and nominated for a 2025 Georgia Chidlren’s Book Award.

Brew-Hammond also wrote the young adult novel Powder Necklace, which Publishers Weekly called “a winning debut”, and she edited RELATIONS: An Anthology of African and Diaspora Voices. Kirkus Reviews called the anthology “smart, generous…a true gift” in its starred review.

Nana is also co-founder of Exit 14, a made in Ghana lifestyle line that has been featured in Vogue.

You’ve probably heard a lot of people telling you that you need a personal brand but very few are showing you “how” you can build or strengthen one.

It’s all well and good to say you need a thing but how do you do it? 🫤

That’s the question I’m answering for you in this episode.

It’s simple.

You want to become two things.

Visible and referable.

As we dive into the how of this, I want you to think through these questions:

  • What do I uniquely create that adds extreme value to the people I serve?
  • Am I creating this thing or experience consistently?
  • Is what I create visible beyond my organization?
  • Do I have a raving fan who knows what I create and is kicking down doors in rooms I'm not in?
  • Does that raving fan know how to tell the story of what I create?

In the end, you’ll learn the steps you can take today to help you become visible and referable so your personal brand can go to work for you.

Can you communicate with compelling clarity every time you speak or share a story?

Or do you feel your words sometimes fall flat, and crickets are all you’re getting back from your audience?

If you fall somewhere in between these two places, then you’re not alone.

We all want to communicate better- whether it’s at work or in our personal lives.

We want our messages to be powerful and impactful, and come through with clarity.

But sometimes, that’s a little tricky to achieve.

By the end of this episode, you’ll feel equipped to communicate to any audience in a way that increases your ability to connect, build influence, and drive positive action.

If you’ve been a Reframe to Create listener for any amount of time, you know just how important this is, especially as you invest more effort in learning how to go beyond creating with your gifts but also being able to own and tell powerful stories about what you create.

This is the key to getting paid to be you and compelling communication is the way there!

Does it feel like everyone around you is moving fast and breaking things?

We live in a hustle culture where many have the “if it’s bigger, faster, and flashier, then it’s always better” mentality.

Only in recent years have I begun to see a broader cultural shift toward slower and more intentional living.

I can personally attest that it’s the “winning” way.

During these first 100 episodes of the podcast, I’ve learned to embrace the way of the turtle.

I’ve learned to resist the urge to compare and instead delight fully in my own journey.

A journey that was slow.

A journey that was about taking “turtle steps” and even a bit of a pause along the way.

And in this journey, I’ve learned 3 important things that I know you’ll appreciate, especially if the loud roar of others zooming by is deafening.

If you want to try the slow and steady way and see how it can make your personal and professional life more of what you really want, then listen in for the ways I’ve learned that:

  • Creating because it matters is enough. Even if what you create is small.
  • The power of the pause to rejuvenate your creative spark
  • Why consistency beats perfection every time

Getting to 100 episodes has been a goal of mine from the beginning. And I’m grateful to you for coming along with me.

What’s been your slow and steady win?

What’s your most important thing for this year?

How do you decide on your priority?

Do you take a shot in the dark or ask someone you think is wiser?

Answering this question is not only important for January but to shape and color the entire mood and vibe of your year.

If you don’t get a clear view on your priority it’s likely the year will slip right through your fingers in lots of activities that you won't ultimately find meaningful.

In the episode, I talk about how I use a Priority Investment Circle to get my year right.

You may be surprised to know that despite having this podcast I don’t put creating as #1 or the center of my life.

Why you ask?

Because your life should take up that space.

Are you dealing with insufferable people on your job? 🤔

Are you the insufferable person? 😆

Whoooo okay I won’t go there.

But seriously, how are the turf wars and the drama going these days at your job?

Are you ready to get a reframe so you can experience things differently?

If you are my guest Annette Simmons is going to help you do just that.

Annette is the CEO of Group Process Consulting and a best-selling author of books that define and promote “power-with” strategies and principles even though (and in some cases, specifically because) they undermine autocratic “power-over” strategies.

One of her bestsellers The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling was named twice as one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time.

This is the book that introduced me to Annette’s work but it’s just scratching the surface. We dive into the why and how to deal with the territorial games on your job that might be driving you mad.

In this episode, we talk about:

  • How accepting your difference, leaning into your curiosity, and “following your weird” can lead you to the unique things you create
  • Why it’s important that you not dismiss the drama on your job as simply noise
  • How to spot the predictable tactics commonly used to protect silos on your job and how to deal with them
  • How looking for and listening to stories of others can be your empathy superpower on your job
  • The six stories you need to know how to share
  • And so much more!

Annette is a wealth of wisdom and practical advice that you’ll only start to experience in this episode.

Six Kinds of Stories

About My Guest:

Annette Simmons is a vibrant keynote speaker, author, consultant, and CEO of Group Process Consulting. Annette’s most popular book, The Story Factor: Inspiration, Influence, and Persuasion through the Art of Storytelling was named twice as one of The 100 Best Business Books of All Time. All five of Simmons’ business books define and promote “power-with” strategies and principles even though (and in some cases, specifically because) they undermine autocratic “power-over” strategies.

Annette uses storytelling to teach work groups how to dialogue about diverse perspectives and connect the dots between seemingly adversarial perceptions into a new shared bigger picture. Her first book Territorial Games: Understanding and Ending Turf Wars at Work was the result of her recording true stories about “turf wars” that revealed ten predictable tactics commonly used to protect silos.

Her most recent book Drinking from a Different Well: How Women’s Stories Change What Power Means in Action challenges traditional assumptions about what power is, what it is for, and who should have it. This book is a love letter to women who instinctively seek to balance “winning” with moral acts of generosity that protect the weak and preserve our planet.

Her clients have included NASA, Microsoft, Meta, PriceWaterhouseCoopers, businesses large and small, non-profits, and governments.

Are you ready for your next transition as you pivot into something new?

What if your next job or contract was you getting paid to be you?

What would that look like?

What would that feel like?

Absolutely amazing right?

But this sort of thing doesn’t just happen. You have to make it happen. And getting paid to be you is all about becoming the type of person who gets paid to be you.

That’s because you can only go as far as who you are and before your transition you must transform.

That takes a narrative identity shift.

And those only come by changing the stories you tell about yourself and what you create.

It takes getting (re) storied.

This episode is all about what it takes to do this so you can get paid to be you.

Because isn’t it time you stopped getting paid to be everyone else and finally got paid to be you?

Your work is not your job or career. Your work is what you create.

You get this.

But what if you're still searching for the thing that’s yours which you create?

Or if you’ve stumbled upon it, what if that thing isn’t like everyone else’s?

While everyone else is creating tangible things that people can taste and touch, yours can’t be.

What then?

I want you to know you’re not alone in this.

Creating isn’t always tangible.

Some people do create tangible things.

But many more create intangible experiences.

And that’s great news.

It means the world of creating is much bigger and wider than you might have thought.

My guest on today’s episode can tell you all about this because Katie MacDonald has done something truly remarkable.

She’s taken what she’s heard here on Reframe to Create and done the deep work of integrating it into her understanding of herself and her work. She’s let it give her a reframe and the result has been a powerful discovery of what she uniquely brings to the table.

And her unique contribution might be like yours--something intangible.

Learning this has changed not just how she shows up on her job but how she shows up in all of her life.

We also talk about how your unique work doesn’t require that you go on a long journey to find it because you’re already doing it in some way today.

Listen in because you might discover that you’ve already been doing the thing you’ve been searching to find.

About my guest:

Katie MacDonald is a public health professional, passionate about improving lives through increased access to quality health products and services. She has worked in health markets around the world to introduce new health commodities, promote policy change and build public private partnerships. Katie discovered her love for public health as a Peace Corps volunteer in Mali and since then has lived and worked in the Democratic Republic of Congo and Bangladesh. Katie enjoys making connections with people around the world and in her own neighborhood of Columbia Heights in Washington, DC through scuba diving, cooking, reading and running.

Are you feeling stuck in your job? Are feeling unfulfilled? Feeling like you’re not being acknowledged fully for what you do and what you bring to the table? Do you feel like there’s more and you just don’t know how to go about finding out what that is?

Well, you’re not alone.

My guest Adeola Adebiyi knows all about how you feel. Despite being a seasoned Cyber Security executive with more than 15 years of experience in the industry Adeola came to me because she felt stuck.

But I had something for her.

The Resume Excavation is a process I take clients through that’s not about your resume. It’s about you and a treasure hunt that will give you a complete reframe on who you are and the great value that you bring.

If you’re like Adeola you probably treat your resume as this old thing that you only take out when you’re ready to dust it off to get a new job. And the dust-off is usually a minor update with details of your current position. And then you send it off expecting it to perform miracles like landing you some dream job. Which if you know me and have listened to Episode 1 you know the dream job does not exist.

This approach does not work.

But the Resume Excavation process does.

Don’t take my word for it.

Listen in to hear what Adeola had to say about her experience and how the process gave her all she was looking for and more.

About my guest:

Adeola Adebiyi is a seasoned Cyber Security executive with more than 15 years of experience in the industry. She is a Director at Blue Cross Blue Shield of MA in Boston where she currently oversees the Identity & Access Governance program. She is also an Adjunct Professor at Clark University where she teaches Fundamentals of Cyber Security.

Prior to joining Blue Cross, Adeola held various Security and Audit roles at State Street Corporation, PwC consulting, SunLife Financial and other organizations.

She is a proud alumni of Brandeis University and Northeastern University where she obtained Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees. She also holds multiple Cyber Security-related certifications.

Adeola is enthusiastic about mentoring young professionals in the technology and security space. She actively participates in the mentoring program in her organization.

She is married with two young boys, enjoys music, travel and spending quality time with her family.

What has your curiosity done for you lately?

Has it led you to a completely new career?

Has it helped you unlock new and surprising ways in which you’re creative but didn’t know?

That’s what curiosity did for my guest Victoria P. Mitchell and her journey from a member of the Burning Man Project leadership team to COO of Good Party is inspiring and full of wisdom nuggets.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How your definition of creativity may be stopping you from discovering your unique creativity style
  • How it’s possible to become creative in new ways
  • How curiosity can be your door opener to completely new work

You’ll never see your curiosity as something to take lightly after you see how powerful it can be when you intentionally use it to learn and grow.

About my guest:

Victoria P. Mitchell is a Chief Operating Officer, content creator, and speaker who’s on a mission to reveal the paradoxes behind our ability to make a deep, lasting impact. “Exposure is the birthplace of possibility”

When my guest Lamarr Womble said this my mind exploded.

How about you?

Are you exposing yourself to new things?

Could this exposure be the birthplace of not just new possibilities but of new dreams?

This ability to expose yourself to new things is just one of the skills that Lamarr opened up my mind to in our conversation about the skills we need to make our dreams come true.

Overall this conversation made me realize that this is a missing piece from what I’ve been sharing with you here at Reframe to Create.

  • The foundational skills you need to build to support your dreams
  • The power of invested mentors who will create the space for your experimentation
  • How your job can be a skill builder and supporter for your dreams

And much more!

If you’re ready to go after your dreams and create beautiful things, but can’t figure out why you keep getting stuck, Lamarr may have the answer to why.

Do you hope that if you leave things alone they’ll sort themselves out?

Maybe you believe the old adage that “time heals all wounds”.

While this may be true for some things it’s definitely not true when it comes to your gifts!

In this matter, time will not lead to something better automatically.

In fact, the opposite will happen in time to your creating muscles.

They’ll atrophy. They’ll congeal. They’ll get flabby and weak.

In this episode, I share a very squeamish personal story about how I learned that you must happen to your life and your gifts or things will fester and go very bad.

I hope it inspires you to get up off the couch of your life and into your creating workshop!

Hold on to your hat!

What can we learn from Ms. Celie of The Color Purple and Tyler Perry?

Well as it turns out…alot!

These two are powerhouses when it comes to personal branding and creating in a way that allows them to be paid to be themselves.

In this episode, I tease out how they both live out the Reframe to Create 3 Pillars of Getting Paid to Be You.

These are about how to create with your gifts, own what you create, and tell powerful stories about it.

Create. Own. Storytell.

These are the three areas you need to focus on if you’re going to set yourself apart this year and make the unique contribution you were born to make.

But we dig deeper into ownership and why it's non-negotiable.

Listen in to see how they do it and how you can do it too!

Do you know your mission?

When was the last time you reviewed it or did something that moved you toward it?

Staying mission-minded instead of job-focused is something I advise my clients to do all the time.

But it’s tough when you work in a job-obsessed society and in a job that might be full of constant change and drama.

How do you stay focused and keep creating under these circumstances?

You need to give your job a different role so that you can be about the business of being a creating maven who is making a unique contribution and getting paid to be you.

In this episode, I’ve got two reframes for you on how to think about your job so that instead of you getting sucked into its vortex you make it serve you, your life, and what you want to create.

Especially since you have real business to tend to in figuring out how to create with your gifts.

You're on a mission to bring something to life that is all your own and that will help you be paid to be you.

How is that going?

This is work that requires deep commitment and focus.

But how will you do that if you’re not minding your own business?

This episode is about helping you get away from your distractions and back to your own business.

It’s time to get serious.

Real serious.

Serious about who you are and what you bring to the table.

It’s time to show exactly what unique things and experiences you create with your gifts so that those who you’re here to serve can see this and know you’re the one for them.

But how’re you gonna do this?

My guest Claire Harvey has your answer. She’s a personal brand and family photographer with over 25 years of experience behind the lens. Claire believes that one of the most important ways to powerfully show your professional, side hustle, or business brand is through photos and visual assets.

But how do you go about getting these and using them?

In this episode we discuss this and:

  • Lessons from Caire’s intentional and years-long journey from corporate employee to business owner
  • The benefits of building your side hustle while still keeping a full-time job
  • Why a strong personal brand is freedom and will help you pivot
  • Why investing in your visual assets now will pay off for years to come

If you’re ready to get serious about building your personal brand then this episode is for you!

About my guest:

For over 25 years, Claire Harvey has been involved in both the photography and business worlds. Her initial thrilling photographic endeavor was as an intern at the Christian Science Monitor, photographing President Clinton and other White House events. Having her work published in the international publication at such a young age was unique and motivating.

Prior to becoming a full-time photographer and visual strategist, Claire worked in the financial world for a hedge fund, and then for two prominent public financial companies, advising executives on how to communicate with investors. For 5 years she worked for CapitalSource (NYSE: CSE), during both flourishing years and the downturn of 2008. She later moved on to oversee the IPO of Walker & Dunlop (NYSE: WD) and stayed on board playing an instrumental role in the stock's 5-year movement from IPO price of $10 to over $50.

How can you move forward if you don’t know what’s holding you back?

You can’t.

But I’ve got you covered.

In this episode, I drill deeper into the lesson we learned from Hans Hansen in Episodes 59 & 60 about how our existing narratives may be holding us back without us knowing.

I tackle 5 key narratives about yourself, work, and creating that may be holding you back from fully stepping into creating with your gifts and getting paid to be yourself.

By the end, you’ll not only know what they are but have your first marching orders for what to do about this.

Are you ready?

Push play and let’s get to work!

Have you ever wished to be someone else in order to achieve your dreams?

It’s not uncommon to think you need to be someone else or get something else in order to get to where you’re hoping to go.

But what if that’s not true?

What if you already have everything you need right here and right now?

What does that idea bring up for you?

This episode is Part 2 of the earlier part of my conversation with Narrative Change consultant Dr. Hans Hansen which began in Episode 59. Be sure to listen to it before digging into this episode.

By the end, he shares a completely new approach to your transformation that will change not only how you think but what you do.

About my guest: Dr. Hans Hansen is an Associate Professor of Management at Texas Tech, an Embrey Human Rights Fellow at SMU, and author of Narrative Change, the story of how narratives were used to fight the death penalty in Texas. His research interests are broadly related to meaning-making and the methods to inquire into those meanings. Hans specializes in qualitative methods and organizational theory, and his research articles have been published in the Journal of Management Studies, Organizational Research Methods, Human Relations, Organization Studies, Journal of Management Inquiry, and even Law Reviews. Dr. Hansen has held positions at the Kellogg School of Management, Stanford University, Copenhagen Business School, and Victoria University New Zealand. He has consulted for non-profits and Fortune 500 companies, from designing change programs to creating transformational cultures and strong brand identities.

Have you ever struggled to make a change stick?

Maybe you got it going but somewhere down the line things ground to a complete halt.

Maybe you were trying to make a change in your life.

Maybe you were trying to help someone else or your team or your organization to change.

Whoever it is that you were trying to help change you probably found out pretty quickly how hard or near impossible it is!

I know that many of us, myself included, struggle with change and transformation of all sorts in our personal and professional lives.

What I didn’t realize was just how off-base we are about how to go about ensuring these transformations come to life.

Specifically, there’s a missing key that if we get it right will dramatically improve our success in transformations of all kinds.

In this episode, my guest Dr. Hans Hansen, author of Narrative Change: How Changing the Story Can Transform Society, Business, and Ourselves helps us uncover this missing key.

By the end, you’ll learn the missing key and how it can help you solidify your transformations going forward.

I was floored when I got the text.

“Fired.”

No, not me. But someone I know.

Just like that.

In the blink of an eye, it was over.

How would you feel if you got that sort of news today?

Would you be ready for it?

Most people are neither mentally, emotionally, or financially ready for a sudden break up with their job.

That’s why the topic I’ve been sharing the past few episodes is so important.

Learning how to liberate your work from your employer today is one of the best insurance policies against losing your job tomorrow.

And the great thing is you can start doing it today in small ways.

In episode 57 I gave you tips, while in this episode I give you specific examples so you can see exactly how this might look for you.

Because you don’t want to wait until you they tell you “it’s over” before you create your own new beginning.

In this episode, I take you through the 7 steps to build and diversify your work portfolio.

It’s time to whip out your notebook and pen because I’ve got nuggets and you’ve got homework.

What do you think when you hear the phrase “liberate your work”?

Do you think being able to work remotely?

Do you think it means having the ultimate flexible schedule?

Do you think it means quitting your job to become an entrepreneur?

Liberating your work is none of these things.

Furthermore, it’s the key to helping you get paid to be yourself in many different places and spaces.

In this episode, I introduce the concept and invite former guest Sawida Kamara (from Episode 34 “Feeling Your Way to Your Next Job”) to help us unpack what it looks like in practical terms.

We discuss:

  • Your work and who really owns it
  • The importance of being clear about and articulating the impact of your work
  • The nuances of liberating your work from your employer vs liberating yourself from your job

This episode lays the foundation for Episode 57 where I’ll help you understand how to “Build and Diversify Your Work Portfolio”.

About my guest: Sawida Kamara is a skillful capacity builder and changemaker who is passionate about supporting people and organizations in rethinking their status quo, and in making generative changes that advance actualization and equity at the individual and collective level. My work leverages experience and expertise in nonprofit organizational development, systems redesign and change, and adaptive project leadership and management.

Are you running away from what you don’t want, rather than running towards what you do?

Is your focus on your “just in case” plan rather than your ideal plan?

If so, then maybe you’re living in your Plan B and being held back from your Plan A.

For many of us Plan B living has become such a norm that we don’t know we’re doing it.

We often disguise and dress it up in other terms such as “adulting” or “being responsible” or “just the way things are”.

But it’s really just a cop-out because we’re scared.

We’re scared of being disappointed and not being able to get over the shock of the letdown.

The fear can be palpable.

But this ends now my Creating Maven.

In this episode, I take on this Plan B living and share the mindset you need in order to become a Plan A person.

Of course, I also leave you with a practical exercise that’ll help you do the work to shift from your Plan B to your Plan A.

Let’s get to it!

I have a confession to make.

Even though I help others get reframes all day long and help them navigate through some of life’s toughest transitions using a new narrative, a new perspective, and a new story--I suck at my own transitions!

I know I know, physician heal thyself!

Well, that’s what I’m doing in this episode with my guest Carol Cox who is someone I know to be great at learning to pivot and ride the many waves of change we’ve all experienced over the past few years.

Carol Cox is the founder and CEO of Speaking Your Brand®, a coaching and training company that helps high-performing, purpose-driven women entrepreneurs and professionals create their signature talks and thought leadership platforms. But this is not where her story started. She’s had many career and business changes that have given her some great insights and important tools for navigating transitions. She wasn’t holding back on sharing these with us.

We talk about a lot in this episode including:

  • How observing patterns can help us anticipate and navigate change better
  • How learning to experiment more can strengthen our muscles in this area
  • How pivots can be less about making sharp turns and more about going deeper into what you have to offer
  • How to make peace with the fact that you’re multi-passionate by understanding your throughline

If you’re also struggling to be better at navigating through transitions you’re going to really enjoy what we uncover in this conversation.

About my guest: Carol Morgan Cox is the founder and CEO of Speaking Your Brand®, a coaching and training company that helps high-performing, purpose-driven women entrepreneurs and professionals create their signature talks and thought leadership platforms. Carol is host of the weekly 5-star rated Speaking Your Brand® podcast and during election seasons serves as a Democratic political analyst on TV news. Carol was named as one of Orlando's Women of the Year in 2021 and has been featured in Forbes. Through her company and content, her mission is to empower more women to find and use their voice, to tell the stories that need to be told, and to activate ideas for change.

I’m back my Creating Maven and I’ve got one question for you.

Are you brave enough to lose sight of your shore?

This is the question I’ve been wrestling with over the past few months and it's a generous one that keeps on giving!

If like me, you feel the call to leave the safe and familiar in your life so that you can cross the unknown ocean of new possibilities then this episode is for you!

I share the lessons I’ve learned over the past few months of my hiatus.

Lessons inspired by the 2015 Pacific Ocean crossing of four women in a rowboat.

These lessons are:

  • You can never cross the ocean until you have the courage to lose sight of the shore.
  • Life is here to live and not just to exist.
  • We’re all going to find that we have our own Pacific Ocean to cross.
  • Life is mostly “journey” and very little destination.
  • Our ‘doldrums’ can offer us something if we’re willing to look at them in a new way

Are you wondering what your shore is?

Your shore is anything and everything that’s familiar to you. The things that have become your security blanket and that are holding you back from listening to the call of your ocean.

In this episode and beyond I’m back to share more about all the ways you can create in your life. But first…courage!

Going forward I’ll continue to help you see how you can create products, services, experiences, and projects through solo episodes and the wisdom that our guests will share.

Reframe to Create is still on it folks!

We’re also going to keep going into not just what we’re doing and creating but how we’re doing it. How we are moving through our creating and life in a way that keeps life and living at the center.

It’s great to be back and I hope this episode helps you reinvigorate your creating journey!

Have you ever gotten lost driving somewhere?

You keep going and passing the same landmark 3, 4, then 5 times!

It’s confirmed. You’re really lost.

What to do now?

Cry and scream at the steering wheel?

Keep driving and hope you spontaneously get found?

Maybe you just need to stop and get reoriented.

This lesson doesn’t just apply to when you’re on the road but also when it comes to your work and life.

In this episode, I’ve got some tips and will share some big news of my own about what to do when you get lost.

Every new year is the chance to try again.

What will you do with the freshness of this New Year?

At the end of last year, some of my friends insisted that I learn what to do with my new year by watching the Netflix Series “From Scratch”.

I was intrigued and was not disappointed when I dove into the show.

There was so much to learn from the main character Amy but I really came away with 3 key lessons that I’m taking into this year and that you’ll love!

Listen in to see how when we move, release, and embrace we can shake off the cobwebs of one not-so-hot year and be ready to take on a new one.

Here’s to you creating and living more in 2023!

Turtles win the race. This is what I always say.

But sometimes turtles are a reminder that life doesn’t have to be a race at all!

Neither does creating.

If there’s one thing I’ve learned through experience this year it’s that consistency beats intensity, every time.

Sometimes it’s better to just take one step in front of the other and then another.

What we do consistently is what makes up our character and identity. And more important than creating some big flashy thing is the ability to develop the character of a Creating Maven.

This is someone who shows honor and respect for their gifts by consistently creating.

But maybe you haven’t had a very consistent year and would like things to be different for next year.

This episode is about helping you put the 3 things you might be missing in place to get and stay consistent with creating.

Because if you’re going to bring beautiful things to life with your gifts, this is what you need!

Do you struggle with commitment?

Did you struggle to commit to creating this year?

Maybe it’s because you didn’t know how things were going to go or how to guarantee that they’d go well.

It’s okay.

This is a common hang-up that gets folks stuck.

But the truth is there’s no way around commitment.

You must commit first and know the details of how later if you’re going to do anything that’s truly meaningful for your life.

In this episode, I show you how this is true and push you to get ready for the leap we’ll all be taking in the new year.

You must create it!

But how?

You’re clear beyond a shadow of a doubt.

It’s time to move on from your job.

But how do you make sure that you don’t jump out of the frying pan and into the fire as you make your way to your “next”?

It takes having the right mindset.

And this right mindset is four reframes I share in this episode so that you’re set up to take the right practical steps to your next job.

Have you ever eaten something that had gone past its expiration date? Yerk! It was awful and you probably immediately spat it out of your mouth! Well, things can feel just as awful when you stay in a job or any environment that’s gone past its expiration date for you. It’ll get your stomach in knots and feeling all kinds of sick.

But why do we get into and stay in these past-due-date situations? Often it’s because we don’t know how to read the expiration date on a job or situation the way we can easily read it on the label of a bottle.

Sound familiar? Maybe you’re in it right now?

In this episode I wanna help you get better at reading the signs and specifically 3 signs that show you when you’re in a job environment that’s no longer for you.

Have you ever tried so hard to win someone’s approval that you lost yourself?

It’s hard to admit it but like me, I’m sure you can think of at least one area in your life where you've done this.

How does it feel when you come to your senses and realize that you've wasted your time?

Big ouch!

It’s not that there’s anything inherently wrong with wanting to be approved of by others.

After all, we are social beings living social lives in a social world!

But things can go wrong when we’re chasing approval from those who are unable or unwilling to see the true value of who we are and what we bring to the table.

The cost of chasing their approval is not just our sense of self but everything we have to offer.

It often means we are not focused on creating with our gifts and making our unique contribution to the world.

This is precisely what happened to P.T. Barnum in the musical The Greatest Showman and it was a tragedy!

But there’s much we can learn from how he bounced back and got back to who he was and what he created.

In this episode, you’ll learn 3 of these key lessons so that you can also get back to creating with your gifts and making the contribution that only you can make!

Maybe you’ve heard the following David Foster Wallace parable that goes like this:

There are these two young fish swimming along, and they happen to meet an older fish swimming the other way, who nods at them and says, “Morning, boys. How’s the water?” And the two young fish swim on for a bit, and then eventually one of them looks over at the other and goes, “What in the world is water?”

We can all identify with these fish because like them we are also swimming around in our own water.

That water is our narrative and it influences everything about who we are and what we do.

Do you know what narratives are running your life right now?

Are you ready to take responsibility for building a new one so you can create a better work and life future?

My guest in this episode is Guillaume Wiatr who is an expert on helping entrepreneurs and businesses build strategic narratives that align their teams and help them innovate.

But his work and model don’t just apply to these groups.

There’s something very powerful here for you that’s going to help you change the water you’re swimming in!

By the end of this episode you’ll learn:

  • The difference between story and narrative and how they influence your life
  • How when narratives change, worlds can change
  • How to build a new strategic narrative to change your life and impact your world

About my guest: Guillaume is the author of Strategic Narrative: A Simple Method That Business Leaders Can Use to Make Everyone Understand Their Business, Get Behind it and Believe In It. His company, MetaHelm, guides CEOs, founders, and business owners to align teams and accelerate innovation adoption. A former big-firm strategy consultant, Guillaume has founded four ventures.

He is sought after by senior executives of companies like Alaska Airlines, the Gates Foundation, Generations For Peace, AIG, L’Oréal, Spencer Stuart, GAP, Google, Microsoft, and the US and French governments.

After helping to save a 20M euros venture during the dot-com boom, Guillaume went on a mission to turn every company into a source of inspiration that few can resist.

Guillaume teaches and mentors entrepreneurs at startup incubators, EMLyon international business school, and the University of Washington Master of Science in Entrepreneurship, ranked #3 in the US.

It can be something you feel so intensely in your bones that it takes your breath away.

Whatever it is, fear can sometimes take over parts of your life and hold you back from what you really want.

In fact, fear is probably the reason you may be hesitating about investing more time and effort into creating with your gifts.

Yep, the fear can be real!

But even though it can be overwhelming we still have to get to the other side of fear.

What you were born to create and bring forth in this life is too important for fear to hold you back!

That’s why in this episode I’m giving you the reframe you need to help you overcome your fear so you can create!

By the end you’ll where to redirect your attention and how to get out of the fear trap.

What would it look like if you could be paid to be yourself?

Do you even know what to do in order to make this a reality?

You might be someone who thinks that being paid to be yourself requires quitting your job and building a business around your brand.

While this is one option it’s not the only one available to you, especially if you’re not willing or in a position to leave your current job.

Getting paid to be yourself requires a reframe.

It requires that you have a completely different orientation on how you think about and show up in work.

In this episode you’ll learn:

  • How to change your current way of working so you can get paid to be you
  • How going beyond your skills is the key to your next level
  • The four specific ways you can go beyond your skills in order to get paid to be you

By putting the four ways I share in this episode into practice you can not only start getting paid to be you right where you are now but you’ll start to see and create more possibilities of this elsewhere.

What if you could just cut to the chase and learn how to be more connected to what you’re really looking for from the beginning?

What if you knew how to lead with your ultimate goal of what you want to experience and how you want to feel?

In today’s episode, my guest Sawida Kamara gives us a front-row seat to what it looks like when someone has mastered how to do and live from this place out loud!

A New Year often brings lots of talk about making commitments to new resolutions.

But our current view of commitment isn’t serving us.

Do you try to leverage the mayhem to your benefit?

You’ve got to become indistractable.

But how?

Have you ever wanted to give up because you questioned if all the effort you’ve put into creating was worth it at all?

My guest knows all about this and shows us how to remain committed to creating, despite the challenges along the way.

In this episode, author Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond teases nuggets of gold from the toughest lessons she learned not just before but also after the debut of her novel “Powder Necklace”.

Lessons like:

  • Accepting that there’s never going to be a perfect set of circumstances to make creating easier
  • Learning to follow your creative spark even if it switches gears
  • Knowing when something you’ve created has missed its time.
  • Embracing the new parts of yourself you’ll discover on your creating journey.
  • Realizing that decision points don’t just come once. They come again and again.
  • Seeing that creating isn’t an easy road that gets easier. It’s not even a hard road that will get easier. It’s often a hard road that gets harder. Even so. Keep going. It’s still worth it.

Even if you’ve never felt like you had "a book inside you waiting to come out" there’s so much you’re going to learn from this episode about committing to a creating journey that’s windy, twisty, and gloriously imperfect!

If you’ve never read Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond’s debut novel “Powder Necklace” then you’re missing out and need to "run not walk" to grab your copy!

Learn more about what Nana is doing next by visiting: www.nanabrewhammond.com

My Guest: Nana Ekua Brew-Hammond is an American-Ghanaian writer of novels, short stories, and a poet. In 2014 she was chosen as one of 39 of Sub-Saharan Africa's most promising writers under the age of 40, showcased in the Africa39 project. Nana has been featured on MSNBC, NY1, SaharaTV, ARISE TV and has been published in Ebony Magazine. Her writing has also appeared in New Daughters of Africa: An International Anthology of Writing by Women of African Descent, Everyday People: The Color of Life-A Short Story Anthology, African Writing, Los Angeles Review of Books, Sunday Salon, and the short story collection, Women’s Work. Coming up next from Nana is a new novel, a children’s picture book, and a short story in the anthology Accra Noir.

How can you create anything when your life is overflowing with family and life obligations?

This is the question my guest Chidimma Jones-Mubima kept asking and which led me to stage a creating intervention. I’ve known Chidi for years and she’s a professional, just like you, with a deep desire to create in the midst of a life that can feel overwhelming in its constant demands.

In this episode, we take on this challenge as I coach her through the necessary steps to establish her own creative hygiene practice.

Listen in for some of these key takeaways:

  • There is no perfect time to create so you might as well create now
  • Routines may or may not help you
  • Consistency rather than perfection
  • Focus on building the identity before you focus on results
  • Get it in where you can get it
  • When all else fails just stop, drop, and create

My guest: Chidimma Jones-Mubima has over 19 years of progressive experience in higher education, and last year, made a career pivot to Learning and Development. Currently, she is a Training Specialist at Heartland Alliance in Chicago, where she develops staff through strategic, meaningful and relevant learning opportunities.

Chidimma is currently pursuing an MBA in Global Supply Management and Entrepreneurship from DeVry University. She has a Master’s in International Educational Development from Teachers College, Columbia University and a Master’s in Intercultural Communication from the University of Pennsylvania. Her undergraduate degree from the University of Virginia is in French Language and Literature, with a minor in Spanish.

Chidimma was born in Sierra Leone, spent four years of her childhood in Côte d’Ivoire, before moving to the United States as a teenager. She currently resides in the Chicagoland area with her husband and their two children. In her free time, she reads, writes, designs, travels, and spends time with her family.

I recently got back from a girls' trip to Dakar, Senegal that completely re-energized me. What was it that made this vacation so amazing?

Was it the spa, the food, or the shopping?

It was definitely all of these things and much more.

Our conversations showed me one specific and important lesson about the power and significance of storytelling.

In this episode, I share what that important lesson was and why it matters for you on your creating journey. I also share the 8 key elements you need as you begin to craft your own story.

Everyone has a story that shows the world who you are and what you have to offer. So it's time you learn how to tell yours!

When was the last time you wailed this phrase? Last week? Yesterday? An hour ago?

I’ve got some tough love for you in this episode.

Time is not your problem, so time management is not the solution to your creating woes. If you’re going to unleash your creating power then you’re going to have to go beyond time management.

And I’m going to show you the three specific reframes you need in order to do this.

Your resume may hold the key to helping you get clarity on your unique contribution--the thing that makes you incomparable and will help you to get paid to be yourself. In this episode, you’ll see that one of the great benefits of creating is the many ways you can serve the world around you. My guest does this by putting smiles on people’s faces with her delicious food.

Margaret Kamara is the Founder of District Chop Bar, a West Africa fusion concept based in Washington DC. District Chop Bar offers catering services, meal preps, and wholesale products. I’ve known Margaret for years! She’s someone whose ability to take consistent action in creating with her gifts so they become a reality serves as an absolute inspiration to me. And she’s here today to talk to us.

She’s the person who comes to mind when I ask myself “who do I know out here who is the portrait of a creating maven”. That would be Margaret.

  • We talk about the impact that tapping into her gifts to create has had on her community
  • We talk about what she’s looking to create next
  • And We also talk about how creating can still be a powerful tool and experience for someone who doesn’t intend to extend themselves beyond their 9-5
