This week Conor chats with Kate Still who is the independent reviewer for the Community Learning and development (CLD): independent review.Kate has over 30 years of experience within education and is currently a UK Board member of the National Lottery Community Fund and Chair of the Scotland Funding Committee.In this episode we discuss Kate’s role for the review, common themes that came out of the consultation from learners and practitioners and what we hope to see from the review and so much more. This week on CLD Talks Conor sits down with Karen McArdle who is a Professor at the University of Aberdeen and an Honorary Professor at the University of Dundee. As well as this Karen is also the Deputy President and Trustee of the Workers’ Educational Association (WEA).
We discuss Karen’s career from moving to Australia and working within Aboriginal communities, coming back to Scotland to continue to work with communities in need, why social justice has played such a pivotal role in everything Karen does, working within universities, being an author on the new CLD Book “Community Work: Theory into Practice and so much more!

The Fund supported over 440,000 young people since 2008, redirecting the proceeds of crime into the most deprived communities in Scotland.

We spoke with them about what the youth parliament does on a day to day basis, and their experience within the Scottish Youth Parliament and why they got involved with this brilliant organisation! In todays episode ben and Conor went and visited the class of the community development course at Glasgow university and the community education course at UWS in these visits we gave the classes an insight into the podcasts background to how it first started and how’s it developed over time. CLD Talks has been set up to raise the profile of Community Learning Development across Scotland. We will have Talks with front line community workers from third sector and statutory organisations, managers and decision makers to share practice, promote their work and some feel good moments of their careers.

AFAS aims to promote and develop the sport of amputee football in Scotland. Marion tells us about how Camp America changed her views, her desire to help others, various sessional roles and from becoming Area Manager for Universal Connections to then taking on the role of becoming Director of the CLD Standards Council and lots more!
Marion is also a Trustee @ Impact Arts and Chair of Learning & Teaching @ Glasgow Kelvin College.
During this time Marion gained her BA(HONS): Commerce with Information Management, PGCE: Community Education and became a Doctor of Education: Young People, Enterprise & Social Capital.

Today’s guest is Adele Martin, who works for the Youth Family and Community Learning Service in South Lanarkshire. Adele was a young person from the age of 10 at her local youth club taking part in all activities which led to her becoming a volunteer and now a part time member of staff.
We have an honest discussion about how Adele has had the opportunity to go to China three times, her inspiration to becoming a youth worker, the transition from volunteer to becoming a member of staff, the work she did to stay connected to young people while in lockdown.

For the first episode of CLD Talks I had the privilege to have a conversation with Jim Sweeney MBE. Jim has had such a varied carrier in Community Learning and Development starting from being a Trainee in the County of Lanark in the 70's, becoming area manager for various local authorities and then becoming the Chief Executive of Youth Link Scotland for 12 years.
During this time Jim gained his Diploma in Youth work and Community Service (DipYCS) at Jordanhill 74/76. Then went on to complete his Masters Degree in Msc Advanced Professional Studies at Strathclyde University in 2001.
