This is a prayer or prārthana. The son of mRkanDu mahaRši, mārkanDēya created this stavam. It is found in māgha māhātmya. He prays to candraśēkhara, to save him. He takes refuge in candraśēkhara and says what can yama do?

The phalaśRti says that whenever anyone feels scared of death, they can read/chant this stavam, and they will live their whole life, without disease, with all kinds of wealth and respect. And that śiva will grant them mukti (mōkša) without even trying.
