Faith or works? There often seem to be conflicting statements in Scripture regarding faith and works. Saint Paul’s letter to the Ephesians says, “For by grace you have been saved through faith, and this is not from you; it is the gift of God; it is not from works, so no one may boast.”
Yet listen to the very next line, “For we are his handiwork, created in Christ Jesus for the good works that God has prepared in advance, that we should live in them.” Our good works are part and parcel of a saving faith. After all, Saint James later added that, “faith without works is dead.”
Do your actions embody your faith in Jesus Christ? How often do they reflect the love of God?
Let’s listen to Jesus’s words in Friday’s reading from the Gospel of Saint John, Chapter 10, where he challenges his disciples to judge Him by HIS works.
“If I do not perform my Father's works, do not believe me; but if I perform them, even if you do not believe me, believe the works, so that you may realize and understand that the Father is in me and I am in the Father."
Let’s Pray - Father of Grace and Mercy – We recognize you are the Son of God by your works on behalf of the Father. Help us to reflect our faith in you through our works – may we be your hands and feet as our actions demonstrate your love. Amen
