In this episode we meet Michiel Van Dorp, a Life Perspective Coach who helps people affected by childhood traumatic events and suicide. His desire to help people in these areas stems from his own experiences with complex childhood trauma and two suicide attempts. Michiel also leads groups in Positive Intelligence. Michiel currently resides in the Netherlands.
Through our conversation, we learn the difference between a catastrophic traumatic experience versus complex childhood trauma. Michiel shares how his life has been impacted by childhood trauma and a wobbly foundation of insecure attachment growing up. In his journey to find healing, he has learned much from Gabor Mate, who explains that trauma is having lost contact with your essence, with your sense of self. Michiel openly talks about his two suicide attempts and what he learned about himself and his situation from those experiences.
After his second attempt, a friend and coach asked two powerful question that changed his life. 1) How do you remember yourself, at your earliest memory? and 2) What would be the legacy you left behind if you succeeded with this attempt? The first helped him get in touch with his essence, who he really is; and the second gave him a goal in life, something to live for.
"Whatever circumstances you get in, if you really put your mind to it, you can overcome everything." Looking into the future, Michiel sees a wealth of experience leading to multiple gifts-- gifts to himself and others. He is committed to help other people to not only survive, but to thrive in life.
