When working with animals we have found that dealing with the pain first allows the practitioner to more effectively treat the animal. Kinesthetic cueing is how touch gets interpreted in the brain. During injury the brain will actually decrease the amount of information coming from the injured area. Motion and emotion are directly related. Remember being in a state of fear or anxiety. Not exactly an emotion that elects smooth movements does it? How you approach an animal or another human is limited by the emotional state you are in at the time. During our days of NLP training one of the best ways for breaking the states of the people in our group was to make them dance wildly. Movement can directly affect the emotional state. If someone is depressed their posture is more one of flexion. The quickest way to make a change is to invite them into a different posture. Animals are like walking biofeedback machines. We were inspired to do this podcast because a horse we were working with was able to maintain its taping application for 3 weeks on its lower back along the SI joint. The client stated that they did have to trim some off as it began to flap but through riding, bathing and rolling the tape stayed on. Now you might question the elasticity left in the tape the fact that it was still affecting the mechanoreceptors in the hair follicles which affects the fascia which continues to communicate with the brain. Graded exposure is a treatment technique that used to reduce physical sensations of anxiety and discomfort. When working with animals and humans sometimes jumping right into treatments can create a reaction that is over emphasized compared to the stimulus. When starting fascial work with a tool and the subject pulls away at the slightest touch is a great example. Graded exposure is starting slowly, lightly and gradually increasing pressure to tolerance. Listen along on how important graded exposure is for outcomes.
Knowing when to tape is key for producing desired results. We get asked all the time how to tape "x". X being some body part. There is a lot more to that like evaluation of the area in question, what type of injury has occurred, can motion be restored at this time or is there too much inflammation. Tape is an adjunct to your technique. Do what you do first and then you will know when, how and what to tape.

This episode is a discussion of a case study of a large mastiff named Lucky. He came to see us after losing strength in his hind legs and was unable to get up unassisted. He was taken to his vet for evaluation and treatment. His condition continued to decline and was taken to an acupuncturist with no results. Sarah Wayda is an accomplished Grand Prix rider and head trainer for Hunter Farms in Princeton, NJ. In this podcast we discuss a case we had this week of an older dog that was recommended to be put down. The owner looked at the dog and knew it was not ready. He is a large dog and has made it to 15 years old. Last week he was accidentally stepped on by a horse and developed a large hematoma on his back. He had previous instability in his hind end and also lives in a household with tile floors. One morning he was not able to get up from sleeping all night. In a panic he was rushed to the emergency vet and they recommended due to his age and immobility he should be put down. The owner knew he wasn't ready and called Equalign.
