Even on our own show, we often have difficulties presenting Spanish-language speakers properly. How do we translate what’s being spoken without losing the emotion or integrity of the speaker. Our goal, of course, is to transmit the information without disrupting the flow of the piece, but it’s hard to say how well or how often we succeed.
But Antena Los Angeles, an interpretation, translation and language justice group, has perfected the art of socially-conscious language interpretation. Their focus is on ensuring that the public even spaces they create are fully bilingual or multilingual, so that no one language dominates over another.
For this week’s Sabiduría, we hear from Antena members Jen Hofer, Ana Paula Noguez Mercado and Miguel Morales on how they approach language interpretation and what we can learn from thinking about language justice.
