Paul had the opportunity to share his testimony with a crowd of zealous Jews who had just tried to kill him. Paul could relate to them, having once been a zealous persecutor of the church himself.

The Holy Spirit gave multiple prophetic warnings that trouble awaited Paul in Jerusalem. Everyone was telling Paul not to go to Jerusalem, but Paul knew in the Spirit that he had to go there.

When a revival started in Ephesus, the sale of Artemis shrines dropped significantly. A silversmith named Demetrius, who made silver shrines, stirred up a riot after seeing the loss of business. As God's kingdom impacts the culture, persecution against the followers of Jesus will increase.

God was doing extraordinary miracles through Paul. But when the Seven Sons of Sceva tried to mimic Paul's authority, a demon possessed man overpowered them and wounded them. Paul found some disciples in Ephesus. After explaining the way of God more accurately to them, they were baptized in the name of Jesus, and baptized with the Holy Spirit. Paul stayed for two years in Ephesus teaching the Word of God, so that all the residents of Asia heard the Word of God.

Paul ends his second missionary journey after leaving Corinth and passing through Ephesus. He leaves Priscilla and Aquila in Ephesus to help strengthen the church there. While in Ephesus, they meet a Jewish man named Apollos. After hearing him speak in the synagogue, they privately take him aside and explain God's message to him more clearly.

When Paul first came into Corinth, he was met with opposition. Paul was afraid, but Jesus appeared to him in a vision and said, “Do not be afraid, but go on speaking and do not be silent, for I am with you, and no one will attack you to harm you, for I have many in this city who are my people.” Paul discovered that community and friendship helped him overcome fear, and he stayed in Corinth for a year and a half.

When Paul was waiting for Silas and Timothy to come to Athens, he was provoked in his spirit because of the idolatry he saw in the city. Paul knew he had to start telling people about Jesus. Paul then found himself preaching on the Areopagus in Athens, a famous hill where philosophers taught and debated new ideas. Paul preached Jesus and the resurrection. Our message is a person, not a philosophy.

The Word of God continued to spread throughout Macedonia by the missionary efforts of Paul. Cities like Thesselonica and Berea were impacted with the gospel, and the message of Jesus spread out from those cities.

Paul and his missionary team go to Philippi, and after Lydia gets saved they go to find a place of prayer. On the way they are met by a demonized slave girl, but she gets saved. Then Paul and Silas are thrown in prison, and the jailer also gets saved. These are three great testimonies of salvation in Philippi.

Paul began the second missionary journey by taking Silas to Derbe and Lystra, and there they met Timothy, a young disciple. Timothy joined Paul, and so did Luke, and the Holy Spirit led them to Macedonia to start a new work of God in Europe.

The Jerusalem council united over an agreement of how people are saved, but then Paul and Barnabas divided over a disagreement about John Mark.

As we read about how the early church wrestled with the issue of whether Gentiles who came to faith in Christ had to also keep any part of the law to be saved, we will see how to deal with false teaching in the church and why the truth that salvation by grace alone, through faith alone, in Christ alone, gives God the greatest glory, and is the basis for true Christianity.

Paul and Barnabas faced many tribulations during their first missionary journey, including being mistaken as gods in Lystra, to then being stoned and left for dead. Paul preached the Word of God in the city of Antioch Pisidia. The Word of God spread throughout the whole region. Many believed, but some of the Jews rejected the Word and thrust it aside.

Paul preached a sermon in a synagogue, and he was able to systematically work through the Word of God to show that Jesus is the Christ.

Barnabas and Saul began the first missionary journey by traveling to the island of Cyprus. There they had an encounter with a magician and a proconsul. The magician was blinded and the proconsul came to the faith in Jesus.

The church in Antioch was led by the Holy Spirit. That church set apart Saul and Barnabas for the work that God was calling them to do. Years later the church in Antioch could look back on all the good things that God had done through them, because they listened to and obeyed the Holy Spirit.

In Luke 2:25-35 we meet Simeon, a devout and righteous man, who was expecting to meet Jesus, the Christ. Once Simeon met Jesus he was able to die in peace.

The church in Jerusalem was facing violent persecution from King Herod. The Apostle James was martyred, and it was looking like Peter was next. However, God had other plans for Peter, and he sent an angel to break him out of jail. This happened while the church was in earnest prayer to God on Peter's behalf.

The church in Antioch was growing, and Barnabas went to see what was happening. When he saw the grace of God he was glad. He then brought Saul to join in the work God was doing there. The Lord's hand was on the church in Antioch, and it became the first place where disciples of Jesus were called Christians.

Peter preached the gospel to Gentiles, after realizing that God shows no partiality. God loves to save both Jews and Gentiles alike. As Peter was speaking the gospel message to Cornelius and his household, the Holy Spirit fell upon them, showing that salvation is for everyone who believes, and so they were all baptized.

Simon the Magician thought that he could buy the power of the Holy Spirit from the Apostles. Peter sternly rebuked Simon for that sort of thinking, and told him what he needed to do to get his heart right with God. The question remains, did Simon get right with God?

The Apostles are brought in to stand before the Sanhedrin council. They boldly preach the gospel, and after being warned about speaking in the name of Jesus they are beaten and released. The Apostles rejoiced that they were counted worthy to suffer dishonor for the name of Jesus.

This section of Acts provides some marks of a growing church. Even though fear had come upon the church after Ananias and Sapphira, there was still great power and grace upon the church, and more and more people were being added to the Lord.

The church in Thyatira was a hardworking and growing church, however there was a tolerance for sin that Jesus needed to correct. Jesus calls us to repentance so that we can receive his grace.

Jesus encouraged the church of Smyrna as they faced religious and political persecution. He told them to be faithful unto death. They did not have to fear death because Jesus died and came to life, and he promises eternal life.

The book of Nehemiah does not end on a good note. It ends with the people failing in the areas that they said they would obey God's law in. The Pharisees, the children, and a rich young ruler all come to Jesus for a variety of reasons. We learn that only the children came the right way to enter the Kingdom.

To celebrate our first Easter as a church we look at 1 Peter 1:1-9. Those who put faith in Jesus have been born again to a living hope. We have a living hope because we have a living God. Jesus died for sin, was buried, and three days later rose again. Therefore, hope is alive!

For Palm Sunday, we continue in Mark where Jesus teaches about hell. Jesus describes hell as a place of unquenchable fire, a worm that never dies, with weeping and gnashing of teeth. On Palm Sunday Jesus wept over Jerusalem, because the people did not want peace by being gathered to Jesus. Jesus weeps for those who perish apart from him.

Jesus foretells of his death and resurrection for the second time, however, his disciples are arguing about who is the greatest. We learn from Mark 9:30-41 that greatness and unity come by being last of all and a servant of all.

Pastor Daniel went up to Calvary Chapel Santa Barbara to give a report of what God is doing at Calvary Chapel Palos Verdes. In this teaching, you will hear the thankfulness we have to the church that sent Daniel and Leah to plant CCPV, and also some of the back story of how we started as a church.
The transfiguration is Jesus showing himself as he is. God's desire is to reveal himself. Having denied ourselves and following the real Lord. He reveals himself in all his glory to us. And the pathway to accessing this revelation is prayer, as shown in the example that follows.

Jesus gives the call to anyone who desires to follow him and says what it will cost, that we must deny ourself, and take up our cross.

Jesus continues his ministry by healing a blind man, but he ultimately is looking to heal spiritual blindness. Jesus asked the disciples the most important question anyone can ever be asked: who do you say that I am? The disciples are beginning to see that Jesus is the Christ, but they are still in the process of seeing him clearly.

Jesus multiplies bread for another great crowd, but the disciples are not understanding the meaning and purpose of it yet. Jesus warns the disciples of the leaven of pride and unbelief, hoping they will soon see him as the bread of life.

While on vacation with his disciples, Jesus is sought out by Gentiles. Jesus breaks through cultural barriers and ministers to these "other" people with some interesting methods. Mark 7:24-37 shows us God's heart for all people and how he works uniquely for each person.

Our greatest problem is internal, not external, in that what we need in order to be saved and transformed is a new heart. God graciously gives this to us when we come to Christ.

The disciples are struggling to make it across the Sea of Galilee when they see Jesus walking on water. Their initial reaction was fear, but after Jesus calms the storm they see him for who he really is and worship him. Mark 6:45-56 speaks of the difficulty of storms and the importance of looking to Jesus in them.

The disciples are doing so much ministry that they don’t have time to eat. Jesus calls his disciples away to rest awhile, however the crowd runs to meet them in the desolate place where they were going. Jesus has compassion on the crowd, so he teaches them and then multiplies loaves and fish to feed them. Mark 6:30-40 shows us how Jesus gives us rest and feeds our spiritual hunger.

The name of Jesus is continuing to spread, and King Herod hears about Jesus. Mark 6:14-29 explains how John the Baptist was put to death because of Herod's compromise with sin. Herod's guilty conscience for what he did to John was blurring his ability to see Jesus clearly. He believed Jesus was John raised from the dead. Are you seeing the real Jesus clearly?

Jesus marveled at their unbelief which was caused by familiarity and he could do no mighty works there. Jesus then sends out his disciples into villages to do his mighty works. Are we receiving and doing mighty works of God in faith, or have we become too familiar with Jesus?

Jesus crosses back over the Sea of Galilee to find a crowd waiting for him. He performs two miracles and how they intersect tells us about how Jesus has a perfect plan that unfolds beautifully every time.

Stepping onto the shore of the Garasenes Jesus is confronted by a man that is severely demonized. Jesus delivers the man by sending the demons into a herd of pigs. This display of power and authority caused some to worship and others to be afraid. Mark 5:1-20 gives us understanding of the reality of demonic activity.

Luke tells us about the birth of Jesus, but what people often miss is how active the Holy Spirit was in the advent of Jesus. Today, the Holy Spirit is the power and the presence that we need to be effective witnesses for Jesus in the world.

Jesus tells the disciples to go to the other side of the Sea of Galilee. Suddenly, a storm arises and the disciples question whether Jesus even cares. Jesus wakes up and calms the storm. Jesus does care, and he calms the storms in our lives.

Jesus begins to teach the crowd and his disciples in this parable. He explains to his disciples that the secrets of the kingdom of God have been given to his followers, but we have to listen. The four soils represent how we listen and receive the Word of God into our hearts.

More and more people are finding out about Jesus and are beginning to follow him. However, his family thinks that he is out of his mind and the Scribes are blaspheming the Holy Spirit. Mark 3:20-34 cause one to ask the question: Do I know Jesus?

Jesus is confronted again by the Pharisees, but shows that he came to do good and to save life by restoring a man's hand. After healing many more among the great crowds, Jesus goes up on a mountain to choose the twelve apostles.

Sometimes, we can get so caught up in religion and rules that we miss the reality of Jesus in our midst. We all need to be on guard against any legalistic tendencies in our own lives that will rob us of the joy of living a vibrant relationship with Jesus. Our faith is not about what we can do for God, but rather what he has already done for us through Jesus.

Jesus shares a meal with many tax collectors and sinners after calling Levi to follow him. When questioned by religious leaders, Jesus says that he is a physician, not for the well, but for the sick. Mark 2:13-17 shows us that Jesus came on a mission to call sinners into relationship.

BIG ANNOUNCEMENT - We finish Colossians with an announcement for Calvary Chapel Palos Verdes. God has opened the door for us to speak the word in Palos Verdes.
God has given us instruction for relationships in Colossians 3:18-4:1. With our new identity in Jesus, our relationships can thrive.
As God's elect, holy and beloved, we are to put on the characteristics of our new identity. Colossians 3:12-17 instructs the believer in how to live with Godly character.
The Christian has been given a new identity in Jesus. Colossians 3:1-11 tells us to look to heaven and set our minds there, while also showing what the life of a believer should look like.
Do not let anyone sit as a judge in your life to cheat you of your identity and reward. Colossians 2:16-23 shows us that legalism, mysticism, and asceticism are just self-imposed forms of religion that keep people from the real Jesus.
The Christian has a new identity in Jesus. Colossians 2:11-15 tells us how Jesus has made us alive, and how we identify with him through baptism.
Knowing Him is our highest goal and Colossians 2:1-10 reminds us that all wisdom and knowledge is hidden in Jesus.
Bring the real you to the real Jesus. Colossians 1:21-19 shows us who we were apart from Jesus, and who we are in Jesus.
It's all about Jesus. Colossians 1:15-20 shows the true nature of Jesus, that he is God.
Pastor Daniel Hendrickson teaches on Colossians 1:9-14 where the Apostle Paul prays for the Colossians, people he had never met, but had a love and desire for. A similar heart is held for the people of Palos Verdes.
