Primitive reflexes are a window into neurodevelopment, so it’s a great idea to assess them during your functional brain-based exam. But I see a lot of doctors using this in practice incorrectly. This is the 2nd part of the brain-based exam (see the last video for part 1!), and here’s what you SHOULD be doing when you find unintegrated primitive reflexes on your exam. Remember, including assessments of primitive reflexes, eye movements, and gross motor/fine motor does not take you away from principled Chiropractic. Traditions are fun to continue on in our own families, but we need to remember that some of these traditions or rituals might not be appropriate for where our kids are RIGHT NOW.

Do Chiropractors TREAT ODD? No, absolutely not. So how do we communicate the benefits of Chiropractic in a way that makes sense?

Always remember the number 1 rule: Behavior is a window into the brain. They are clues to where we are in brain development. As we move through development, we gain more sophisticated tools. When we have gaps in brain development, we see increases in deflective behavior. We have to see these kids as MORE than their deficits or diagnosis. It is our job to know more, not necessarily do more.

Often in our profession, we do an exam, but perhaps we don’t fully know why we’re measuring the things we’re measuring and how to take those results to determine how and why you should recommend care. Another challenge is understanding how and what to check when re-assessing and appropriately changing the care plan.

When working with this demographic, we know that there can be problems with visualization and prediction. When we ask these individuals to get on a table for an adjustment, we are increasing their sensory input in multiple ways.
