Over the years I’ve come across articles touting very strange modalities and treatments for nerve pain: supplements, apple cider vinegar, ultrasound… But do they actually work? Maybe. If you come across research articles about specific treatments, there may be 1 or 2 people in the sample group that did benefit, but compared to the rest of the group, it may not have been effective at all. So we need to look at treatment modalities with a careful eye, but ultimately comparing its effectiveness with how you feel. You can search for any specific modality and the research behind it by searching: sciatica, modality (of your choice) and the letters “NCBI”. You’ll find the research to support or refute it.

Regardless of modality, treating pain is a scientific process starting with an educated guess. Let your symptoms and progress be your guide in picking which one actually works for you.

Meet Dr. Shivani Gupta, entrepreneur, and PhD in Turmeric. Today we discuss the benefits of Turmeric, Ayurvedic medicine, and how this amazing plant and curcumin extra can help with pain management. Here are some scientific studies citing the benefits of turmeric in pain management like sciatica:

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC3946321/

These results indicated that curcumin exerted a therapeutic role in neuropathic pain by down-regulating p300/CBP HAT activity-mediated gene expression of BDNF and Cox-2

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC7600446/

https://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC10610406/

CUR decreased CD11b and GFAP gene expression in the spinal cord. BDMC decreased IBA-1 in the spinal cord and amygdala as well as CD11b and GFAP in the spinal cord. Both CUR and BDMC reduced PGC1α gene expression in the amygdala, PINK1 gene expression in the spinal cord, and TLR4 in the spinal cord and amygdala, while they increased Complex I and SOD1 gene expression in the spinal cord. CUR and BDMC administration decreased mechanical hypersensitivity in NP by mitigating glial activation, oxidative stress, and mitochondrial dysfunction.

There are a lot of similarities between Sciatica pain and carpal tunnel syndrome. Both are often mismanaged due to most providers addressing the symptom rather than the cause. In this episode we’ll discuss the anatomy of the carpal tunnel, common treatment methods, and what should be done when it comes to treating this issue. Pain management is still focused on addressing the source of pain rather than just the symptoms.

Today we are meeting with Adam Fiore of LimitlessAF, a company based off of Adam’s journey from being a diabetic to in essence curing his diabetes with lifestyle changes. One of the big challenges with Diabetes is the management of blood glucose levels. Having elevated blood glucose can result in a lot of issues in terms of our health. One interesting thing is that having elevated blood glucose levels will affect the nerves. And since sciatica is a nerve related issue, this topic sheds some light on how even the foods we put in our bodies can influence how we feel. We also talk about strategies on how to make changes to our food and health beyond of sheer willpower and discipline.
