Guilt over sin is God’s kindness to us, reminding us that we have done something wrong and we need to do something to rectify that. Guilt over sin reminds us that our nature is sinful, naturally rebellious toward God. Our sinful nature is not easily fixed. Guilt over sin reminds us that our sinful nature still wars within us. When we act in sin we are telling God that we get to define what is right and what is wrong. We have classified sins, and given them levels, as if some are more respectable than others. Yet, all sin is rebellion against God, displeasing Him and damaging us. There is freedom in the grace of God. We must let go of defensive hearts that minimise sin and claim we’re good, knowing that we are guilty before God and that only Jesus can set us free. We must come with our shame and empty hands to Him, knowing we are loved and forgiven by his mercy.
