Won’t you be a neighbour? – Part 1 Sermon by Greg MacRobbie – Sunday, October 3, 2021

Jesus said that one of the two most important commands is to love your neighbour. A lot of Jesus’ followers struggle with putting this command into practice. What does it really mean to love your neighbour? Who does God expect us to apply it to? And how can we stop making excuses and get better at showing mercy?

When asked, what is the most important command, Jesus responded with two – two commands that are so intertwined it would be almost impossible to separate them: love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength. And, love your neighbour as your self.” What does it really mean to love your neighbour? Who does God expect us to love? And what can we learn about how to love others as Jesus loves them?

Take some time to catch up with each other… perhaps have everyone share a high and a low from the week.

  1. Think of a time when you really needed help, and someone stepped in and helped you… What happened? How did it make you feel? Have a few share their story.

  2. Read Luke 10:25-29. Greg shared two things we need to do if we are going to love our neighbours well. The first thing was “stop making excuses”. The religious guy in this Bible passage could quote the commands of God by heart, but when it came to actually living them out, he struggled. Why do we so often struggle with these fundamental commands? What are some of the most common reasons we use for not living them out? Talk about how valid those reasons really are…

  3. Read 1 Corinthians 13:1-3. What do these verses add to the conversation?

  4. The second thing good neighbours do is show mercy. Read Luke 10:30-37. What do you think Jesus meant by ‘go and do the same’? What do you think Jesus is really looking for from us, or in us?

  5. Talk about the poem, “I am only one, but I am one, I cannot do everything, but I can do something. And I will not let what I cannot do interfere with what I can do.”

  6. How does Jesus example in John 3:16-17 motivate you to be a good neighbour?
