The Dietitian Values podcast is a space for conversations that go beyond lip speak, challenge the status quo and, bring us together to learn and unlearn in connection and community. Join me, Laura Jean Accredited Practising Dietitian, as I chat to insightful guests, brain dump my thoughts and start those kind of conversations where we'll probably end up with more questions than answers. Let's create a space for encouraging and inspiring accountable action.

Often in the world of business-as-usual we are presented with options and decisions that lead to pendulum swinging.
Either or decision making.
You're either getting with the program and leaving your values behind (or simply not having the space or time to consider them) OR you're feeling like to choose your values you have to swing in a whole other direction.
Good vs bad. Right vs wrong. This or that. Business savvy or not.
BUT what if there is another option? Or, to be more accurate, another infinite amount of options guided by your values, your resourcing, your capacity, your vision for your business, yourself, your community and the wider world.
Let's dive into pendulum swings and discernment points.

Business growth is an often purported term that has become defined by expectations of continual growth, 'more, more, more' and a constant state of doing business.
But is constant growth even possible?
In todays' episode we are diving into things:
defining growing and growth
looking to nature for example of growth
challenging some of the preconceived 'facts' about growth in the status-quo-upholding business spaces (and highlighting some contradictions)
looking at growth as a stage of your business and how to define it grounded in your values so that you can go after sustainable, cyclical growth that takes you where you want to go.
Growth isn't bad....just a little misunderstood.

You may have internalised messages and programming that tell you that certain things are for everyone else, but not for you. So let's bust that BS hey?
In this episode we'll cover:
how to get curious about what you've been asked to believe about what is and isn't for you
values disconnects and layering that lead to you turning your values in one direction only: outwards
how to start getting curious and (hopefully) unpacking some of the bs you've been asked to take on

Do you accept the cycles of your motivation, consistency and productivity in your business?
This is front of mind for me as I cycle back into podcasting after an unplanned month off and with conversations I've been having with others around cycles and acceptance.
Too often we impose linear expectations and time frames on what is a cyclical rhythm for beings like us that are part of nature. Reminder: you are not a machine.
So, let's chat about:
what I mean by all this
how to notice your cycles and cyclical patterns
acceptance of cycles
actions and practices that support transitions in and out of different cycles
how to plan for the cyclical nature of things inside your business

If you do work that makes a difference and want a different kind of world that has to extend to how you do business.
Doing work that makes a difference, doesn’t guarantee that your business is not perpetuating dehumanising systems and possibly doing harm. AND this is not meant as a criticism or a shame/blame inducing statement…instead it’s an invitation to get curious (with a big side of self compassion).
In this episode I’m offering up space, seeds and contemplation questions to do a little critical analysis or audit of what is actually happening in your business so that you can get clear on whether it’s continuing the difference making of your work or in tension to it.

Talking about your values and what they are is one thing....acting into them is the actual point.
Let's chat about values beyond lip-speak and acting into the same values that we say we have.
Now, the thing about the people that hang around on this podcast is that you are mostly doing this - however there are 2 places where this disconnect consistently shows up for values grounded humans like you. So we are definitely covering those while we are chatting today.

The systems we are embedded in, their values and beliefs, are embedded in all the spaces we occupy...and also inside of us too.
The work of dismantling them and challenging them doesn't just happen 'out there' it's not just the work of protesting, calling reps or posting statements. It's the inner work of identifying and uprooting our own internalisation of these values - and a great place to get started is your business.
From productivity to work to rest we have been and continue to be submerged in these dehumanising systems. We are IN them....the work is choosing and actively resisting being OF them.
In this episode I'm wrapping some words around all this and offering some ways to begin uprooting and dismantling.

This question is a great one for both reflection and planning if you are up to that at this time of the year.
It's supportive when looking at the big picture view - whose kind of world does my business cultivate. And when looking at smaller day to day decisions - whose kind of world does it cultivate if I say yes/no?
The world we have, the culture we are swimming in, doesn't just happen 'over there' or 'by them'.
How you show up matters. Yes, at the bigger picture view AND also in your day to day life. How you show up is exactly what cultivates that life.

You are not a machine.
Unfortunately, traditional approaches to creating a business ask you to act as one.
Uniform outputs. Constant productivity levels. Optimum performance.
Basic inputs. Minimal rest. No demands
Ignore human needs. Disregard your changing energy and capacity. No consideration for difference in resourcing for each individual or within an individual's experience.
It doesn't have to be this way. You don't have to replicate the same system in your business.

What does living a rich life look and feel like to you?
This is a term coined by Ramit Sethi and it's all about getting clear on your priorities and the things you love so you can spend money on them and live your rich life now.
And I think it aligns with a values aligned way of being - money is a resource, a tool - so you can get clear on your values and the things you values and put your resources into those to live your rich values aligned life.
Today I thought I'd share my rich life (inspired by Shante Cofield over on Maestro on the Mic dropping hers recently).
What does your rich life look like? How can you start living it today?

Go forth and sprinkle ALL the seeds. They may not all germinate...but also, maybe they will.
Don't worry, this hasn't turned into a full gardening podcast (yet!) - I'm talking metaphorical seeds. But absolutely feel free to sprinkle all the literal seeds too!
This episode is encouragement, a rally cry but mostly an ode to hope.
When you are doing things differently. When you are at the edge of a space forging into the unknown - your profession, the way you do business, your dreams for your life and the world - it can feel hard.
This podcast is a seed of hope I'm sprinkling in your direction.

Words are not used or defined either neutrally or objectively.
The values of the culture and systems we are part of can be found liberally applied to the words we use and by extension how we feel about them, ourselves, our actions and outcomes.
In business (and life) 2 such words are success and failure.
In today's episode I want to take these words back to their origins and offer up some thoughts and outline how you can apply your values based lens to them.

Does selling your services leave you feeling some sort of way? If so, this one's for you.
I'm offering up a reframe that I use and that I share with the humans I support to reconsider how you think about letting folks know how they can work with you.
You don't have to resort to skeazy sales tactics nor do you have to silently hope that people will just figure it out themselves. You can share what you're up to in a way that give people information without pressure.
A way to share how to work with you and still leave the decision for someone to do so in their hands. And that first part is important because they can't say yes OR no if they aren't given the opportunity.

I believe we are at a turning point. The systems we are part of are pulling us (and in some cases pushing us) back to business as usual.

Or, perhaps amongst all the feels of the past 3 years you had a moment to pause and ask 'what do I want from this one wild and precious life'?....What did your heart answer?

Today I’m in conversation with Geordy Henderson chatting about her experience as a dietitian and what she’s dreaming into for our profession
Geordy is a HAES and non-diet Accredited Practicing Dietitian (APD) based in Australia. Her work focusses on both supporting youth with eating disorders and families in the area of pregnancy and postpartum nutrition.
This year she has launched a new project. After experiencing burnout over and over again in her studies and career, Geordy noticed that other dietitians were feeling a similar type of way. This has led to a passion for creating a space where dietitians are encouraged to rest, to slow down when they feel called to and to turn to connection over competition. This is where Plan to Pause was born.

Running a business requires a lot of decisions. It requires you to be taking action and moving forward,
And as a dietitian or health professional one of the things that can get us stuck is the desire to do the 'right' thing (or not wanting to do the 'wrong' thing).
We can also get stuck in fear, a lack of confidence, the drive to please and the discomfort with disappointing.
And so making decisions and taking action can become a little fraught.
Enter your values - a space to ground in and offer an opportunity to move beyond the right/wrong binary in your business (and beyond).

Okay, now that we have a shared understanding of values (part 1) and you've got your values list (part 2) let's see just what's going on in your actions and how you show up.
Whose values can be found in your actions right now?
It's all well and good to know what your values are but are you acting into them? And if not, why not?
In this 3rd and final part of the finding your values series I'm sharing how you can get curious around what's going on for you and your values right now.
Let's dive in.
What exactly are your values?
In this episode we'll chat about the three places you can start looking for your values, including but going beyond values assessment tools.
And we'll talk about how to make action based values statements that you can actually put into practice in your business and life.
Today's episode is part 2 of a 3 part series on finding your values...or at least making a start, because finding your values is really an ongoing thing. If you haven't, I suggest checking out part 1 first.
Let's dive in.
Let's chat values, and specifically let's start with a shared understanding.
In this episode I'm sharing how I define values and some of the things I hold around values.
Today's episode is part 1 of a 3 part series on finding your values...or at least making a start, because finding your values is really an ongoing thing.
Let's dive in.
Today I want to talk about hierarchies. How they show up in any space where there is difference.
Today is also an exercise in challenging the cultural values that tell me I have to have things all figured out before talking about them. In lieu of answers or expert status around this I'm instead offering up some thoughts and questions for reflecting around and starting a conversation that I think it's important to have.
Let's dive in.
Today I'm in conversation with Jane Charlesworth an anticapitalist coach who supports people to recognise and unlearn their patterning, without shame, to build flourishing lives rooted in sufficiency.
Jane and I talk about redefining success, navigating the straddling of changing and existing in the system at the same time, permaculture and ecosystems.
Let's dive in.
Today I want to talk about acceptance as a starting point. And particularly as it relates to harm and supremacy culture.
In light of current experiences of harm being shared in the HAES(R) space we, providers/professionals who hold a lot of privilege, need to do the work of examining how we show up in the face of harm and how the values of the system around us is enacted by us.
And I think it starts with acceptance.

Relating to yourself, the humans you want to work with and the humans you want to collaborate and hold space with.

Today I'm adding some nuance to the conversation around values.
Often on 'find your values' lists and exercises I see things listed that aren't really values, but more spaces where you act into your values - they are things you value.
Values are verbs - they aren't simply things that are important to you they are ways of showing up that are important to you. They talk to the way you want to act in the world and the kind of world you want to build.
So, if your values aren't actionable then how can you show up in them?

Where would more connection feel supportive for you in your business?

Or are you creating a space where everyone else gets included but you?
Today I want to chat about that exact thing and offer up some prompts to reflect on your business, where it is now and where you want it to take you.
Let's dive in.
Doing business differently needs to include joy...otherwise why are we doing it in the first place?
If the work you do is in aid of building a 'better' world I'm guessing that vision includes joy too.
So, today's episode is a reminder, if you need it, to find and make time for joy.
And once you do, a gentle encouragement to share it.
Let's dive in.
If you've been overlooking your wins, the little day-to-day ones and the big picture ones, today's episode is a reminder to take time to take stock and celebrate.
Humans can tend to have a little bit of a negativity bias, so if celebrating your wins doesn't come easily know it's not you...and know that making an effort to shift and add in the celebrations has a myriad of impacts.
So, as 2021 comes to a close here's the reminder, if you need it, to celebrate the wins, celebrate you.

And equally importantly - who's values do you bring into your business? Yours or someone else's?
Without getting clear on your values you are likely to default to professional or cultural norms. Running your business by someone else's values is guaranteed to lead you to burnout and resentment - not exactly a recipe for success.
