Most doctors prescribe statins to lower LDL (or "bad" cholesterol). However, that's probably not how statins prevent heart attacks and strokes. It's more likely due to an impact on cardiovascular inflammation.

What is cardiovascular inflammation? Inflammation is similar whether it's causing arthritis, skin disease, or inflammatory bowel disease: inflammation is the body's attempt to correct a problem. The immune system sends antibodies and immune cells. Immune cells release enzymes to "digest" tissue that should be there. In the artery wall, that tissue is plaque. Inflamed plaque is unstable. It can leak into the bloodstream and cause life-threatening clot formation.
