Serrapeptase is a proteolytic enzyme produced by bacteria in the gut of a silkworm. It is used by the silkworm to dissolve the cocoon. It's hailed as a natural anti-inflammatory, with lots of promise and with no side effects. It is also claimed to have an effect against the build-up of cardiovascular plaque.
But does serrapeptase work?
If you go to sources like LEI (Life Extension Institute), you get a great story about the "huge potential" and "no reported side effects" of serrapeptase. But if you go to harder science sources (like ClinicalTrials.gov, Cochrane Library, PubMed, Medline), you would get a different story.
