YouTube's automated systems regularly mischaracterize perfectly innocuous videos as "not advertiser-friendly". So when the tech giant decided to offer a "self certification" program, allowing creators to affirmatively tell YouTube that their videos are "friendly" before the bots got to them, it seemed a worthwhile proposition to pursue.

But upon review of YouTube's new system, there can be little doubt that the risks of its use are substantial for content creators who deign to disagree with YouTube's automation.
