Arbor Day is a special day in April that celebrates trees. Julius Norton was a journalist who moved to Nebraska in 1854. He and his wife purchased 160 acres in Nebraska City and began planting trees. He recognized the value of trees and shared his knowledge through his newspaper, the Nebraska City News. In 1872 he suggested a day be set aside to encourage tree planting. The first Arbor Day was held on April 10, 1872. About one million trees were planted. It spread across the country and schools began to participate. In 1885 it became an official state holiday...
