This installment of the “Twenty for Twenty” series looks back on the day that the South Dakota Secretary of State reviewed the Articles of Incorporation of the Center for American Indian Research and Native Studies. The Articles were signed by three Lakotan citizens who were the incorporators: Lois Howe, an Oglala Sioux Tribe citizen; Philip Allen, a Rosebud Sioux Tribe citizen; and Craig Howe, an Oglala Sioux Tribe citizen. The secretary determined that the Articles “conformed to law” and therefore, the secretary wrote, “by virtue of the authority vested in me by law, I hereby issue this Certificate of Incorporation.”...
