Few veterans remain from the Allied invasion force which fought for a foothold on the beaches of Normandy on June 6, 1944. Even the youngest who fought that day are now in their late Nineties. One of the few survivors is 99-year-old Charles Shay, a Penobscot from Maine. On D-Day he was a 19-yearold medic, and although 4,414 Allied soldiers died that day, Shay survived, despite continually exposing himself to enemy fire trying to help dying and wounded soldiers. “I guess I was prepared to give my life if I had to,” Shay said.
