The United States entered the Great War, now called World War I, in 1917. While many opposed the U.S. becoming involved in what was considered a foreign war, patriotic fervor marked the time in Sedalia.  Men registered for the draft; others volunteered. Sedalia High School went so far as to offer a diploma to any student who quit school to enlist (a promise it failed to keep after the war ended).
