When you are reading this week’s edition of The Cattle Business Weekly, I will have settled in for The Black Hills Stock Show and Rodeo.  For many of us involved in agriculture, year in and year out, we spend a few days or the entire week in Rapid City for the winter event.  From the horse sales the first weekend to the cattle sales all week long, a lot of business will be done through the auction block.  Beyond the sales, the trade shows always draw a huge crowd and yes, I do expect Rodeo Rapid City to set a record attendance during its second year in the amazing Monument. Whether it is your first time, or you are a regular, I hope to see you at the BHSS. The CBW field staff are getting into the full swing of bull sales.  Oh yes, the demand and prices have been strong.  It sure looks like high-quality bulls are commanding top dollar from commercial cattlemen and fellow seedstock producers.  The calf market has been profitable and the rumors of calves bringing even more next Fall have most of us optimistic about the future of the cattle business. I do see value in some of the bred heifers selling over the past few weeks.  No doubt the current snow levels and lack of feedstuffs create pressure on that market.  But when the snow melts around the region and all the fog we have had over the past several weeks turns to rain the demand will heat up. I promise you that when May comes the grass will turn green and the creeks will be flowing and the demand for pairs will go through the roof!
