It is not a surprise to many that when the USDA cattle inventory numbers were recently released we saw a decline in our cattle population. According to the report, cattle inventories totaled 89.27 million head or a 3 percent decline over a year ago. The biggest decline is associated with America’s cow herd. We are currently at 29.4 million beef cows, down 3 percent from 2022. This is based off higher cull cow prices which created an 11 percent increase in cow slaughter in 2022.
