Kerry Watkins holds a degree in criminology and psychology, a master’s degree in criminology from the University of Toronto, and a Master of Laws degree in criminal law and procedure from Osgoode Hall Law School. Kerry is also in the process of completing his PHD in law from Osgoode Hall Law School.
In addition to his academic achievements, Kerry spent 30 years in law enforcement, the majority of which he spent as an investigator with the Toronto Police Service, serving in speciality units like homicide, financial crimes, and professional standards. Kerry has conducted nearly 2000 investigative interviews of victims, witnesses, and suspects, and he has studied investigative interviewing methods with some of the world’s leading experts and researchers. Kerry has taught interviewing techniques to police recruits, legal scholars, lawyers, and to students at several colleges in Ontario.
Kerry has won awards for his efforts in modernizing the manner in which police officers approach interviews, and he is a frequent contributor to interviewing literature. He is also the primary author of two books titled “Interviewing and Investigation” and “Evidence and Investigation.”
Kerry is a director at a Toronto based consulting firm called “The Interview Group” which teaches evidence based interviewing approaches designed to maximize and improve the outcomes of investigative interviews.
