Specialist Dialogues in Urodynamics 1: The Use of Urodynamics in the Neurogenic Population. Ulrich Mehnert and Blayne Welk.
The ‘Urodynamics Under the Lens’ content series explores the role, benefits and optimal usage of urodynamics from the personal perspectives of a range of experts in the field. Over recent years, opposing viewpoints in the literature about the value of urodynamics in functional urology have made this a confusing topic for many. This episode aims to dispel misconceptions and encourage reflection.
Future content will include specialist dialogues on the application of urodynamics in specific settings, explore quality assurance in urodynamic practice and provide accessible explanatory content aimed at patients.

WFIPP is pleased to announce that the World Continence Week (WCW) toolkit for 2024 is now available online (Resources Archive – WFIPP.org). Included in this toolkit are the various WCW2024 posters! All created to help you promote World Continence Week 2024 across the globe.
World Continence Week (WCW) is an annual initiative devised and managed by WFIPP, with the endorsement and support of the International Continence Society (ICS), European Association of Urology(EAU) and the Ibero-American Society of Neurourology and Urogynaecology (SINUG).
It is a global initiative intended to raise awareness of bladder & bowel issues, chronic pelvic pain and other debilitating conditions which impact greatly on the lives of patients, families and carers. Our main themes for 2024 are Shared Decision Making, Incontinence and Mental Health and Commitment to Collaboration in Continence Care (the 4 C’s Project).
WFIPP is arranging a series of webinars including those where individual companies will be able to present their innovative device/treatment. Furthermore, there will be a very special webinar/roundtable dedicated to the 4 C’s Project (Commitment to Collaboration in Continence Care) and a special webinar organized together with ECHAlliance about: ‘Continence Thematic Innovation Ecosystem’, both with prominent speakers from across the globe. More details to follow.
Clearly, the objective is to raise global awareness of such conditions and help remove stigmas and taboos via events, publications, press releases and the like. This with a view to providing a reliable and easily accessible forum for those seeking information – patients, families, carers, healthcare professionals, institutions (scientific and academic) and industry and of course all the patient advisory groups around the world.
And now it is your turn, either individually or via your various organizations, to get the message out loud and clear. The success of this global awareness-raising campaign really depends on a massive collaborative effort. WFIPP trusts you will use the toolkit to the full and asks you/your organization to hold as many events as possible to promote WCW24.

The public rightly expects high quality dignified care for all, including older people and persons living with dementia who require care in an institutional care setting such as a hospital or care home. However, in many countries, care quality within these institutions falls far below the public’s expectations.
The speakers for this podcast draw on their own research and broader research to draw attention to institutional structures and processes of care that are risk factors for iatrogenic incontinence. Professor Joan Ostaszkiewicz advocates for continence care that foregrounds the person’s dignity in everyday care interactions. Professor Katie Featherstone describes how her ethnographic research illuminated practices in hospitals that systematically fail to recognise and meet the basic hygiene needs of older people and people living with dementia. Dr Tiina Vaittinnen argues that iatrogenic incontinence is a form of harm and injustice that is deeply imbued in the present cultures of care in institutionalised care settings and that it is caused by dysfunctional health systems. Collectively, they articulate the system-level, long-term economic and environmental impacts of the lack of attention to incontinence and continence caregiving in public health and policy.

Bladder augmentation is a surgical procedure performed to provide adequate bladder capacity and preserve kidney function, as well as improving quality of life. Indications for augmentation cystoplasty are divided into two groups: neurogenic and non-neurogenic causes such as spinal cord injury, multiple sclerosis, Spinal cord injury, myelodysplasia, tethered spinal cord and detrusor hyperactivity with high pressure , chronic cystitis, radiation cystitis, cloacal cystitis, defunctionalized bladder in a patient who is on dialysis. Timing is important for bladder augmentation in patients on dialysis who will undergo kidney transplantation. Monti and Mitrafonoff procedures are also surgical procedures for easy urethral catheterization. Patients must be persuaded of the importance of attending lifelong follow-up.
