Title: "What’s in it for me? (Mark 10:28-45)**"

  4. The Cost of Discipleship
  5. Being a Christian disciple can sometimes come at a great cost.
  6. In history and some parts of the world, being a disciple has been seen as very costly.

  8. "What am I going to get out of this?"
  9. Most people ask this question before committing to something.
  10. Peter asks Jesus about what they will receive for leaving everything to follow Him.
  11. Jesus' Response
  12. Jesus assures Peter that those who leave homes, families, and careers for Him and the Gospel will receive a hundredfold in this present age.
  13. The blessings include homes, brothers, sisters, mothers, children, and fields, along with persecutions.
  14. In the age to come, they will receive eternal life.
  15. The Value of Giving to God
  16. The commentator interprets the idea of receiving a hundredfold as being "compensated for anything you might forego."
  17. Investing in the mission of God brings spiritual blessings that surpass any physical sacrifices.
  18. Forsaking friends and family for a season of service to God can result in gaining new spiritual family and close relationships.
  19. Eternal Wealth and Spiritual Poverty
  20. Those who invest everything in serving Jesus Christ will be internally wealthy in the life of the Spirit and the future coming kingdom.
  21. Choosing to live for oneself leads to spiritual poverty.
  22. Discipleship costs time, money, energy, status, and possibly persecution, but the rewards are spiritual and eternal.
  23. Jesus' Predictions of His Death
  24. Jesus tells the disciples that they are going up to Jerusalem, where He will be delivered over to the chief priests, teachers of the law, and eventually killed.
  25. He also predicts His resurrection after three days.
  26. James and John's Request
  27. James and John, with their mother's involvement, ask Jesus to grant them positions of honor in His kingdom.
  28. They desire to sit at His right and left hand.
  29. Jesus' Response to James and John
  30. Jesus tells them that they don't understand what they are asking.
  31. He asks if they can drink the cup He drinks and be baptized with the baptism He undergoes.
  32. Conclusion
  33. James and John's request shows our innate desire to prioritize ourselves and our families.
  34. Jesus emphasizes that true discipleship involves humility and service, not seeking positions of honor.
