GILBERTOWN – Newly-elected Circuit Judge J. Perry Newton officially took his oath of office for the First Judicial Circuit during a ceremony at Heritage Church of God in Gilbertown Jan. 12. With his wife Paula at his side and a crowd of family and friends in attendance, Newton was sworn in by outgoing Judge Gaines McCorquodale. Newton ran unopposed for the seat on the Republican ticket and replaces McCorquodale, who had served 14 years on the bench. Newton will preside over cases in the three-county circuit, which includes Choctaw, Clarke, and Washington counties.
