One hundred and thirty-one years ago there was a serious effort to create a new county out of portions of Clarke, Marengo and Wilcox. Railroad boomed area The railroad had come through in the late 1880s, creating the new boom towns of Thomasville in north Clarke and Pine Hill and Sunny South in Wilcox. All were stops on the Mobile and Birmingham Railroad. The sleepy Clarke County village of Jackson got a jolt from the railroad, which ran just under the hill from the downtown district and on up through the Bassetts Creek valley in the center of Clarke County....
