March 22, 197350 Years Ago Clarke County’s oldest business institution, The Clarke County Democrat, announced last week that the county seat weekly has been purchased by Bob McGwier of Grove Hill. The paper had been in the same family for 117 years. It was founded in 1856 by Isaac Grant and operated by him until his grandson George A. Carleton became editor in 1907.
