Most readers are familiar with the prophet Nehemiah. He was the cupbearer to King Artaxerxes I of Persia, a person of high rank in the king’s household. But when he heard from the remnant of Jews in Judah of the conditions in Jerusalem, he asked the king for permission to return to the city to help rebuild the walls around it. The king granted his request and provided safe passage for him.
