Many soldiers gave their lives in World War II, including Clarke County men. One of those was Clayton B. Baugh of the Bassetts Creek community who died in the crash of a B- 17 bomber over Germany on Aug. 16, 1944 — 80 years ago this month. He had just turned 22 a month earlier. The oldest child of Mr. and Mrs. Robert S. Baugh, Clayton had four siblings — Lois, Laura, Elsie and Robert. He was one of 47 seniors to graduate at Clarke County High School in 1940.
