In years past, county and municipal wet/dry referendums were particularly heated, pitting the two sides on the alcohol sale question. Referendums were initiated by petition drives of pro-wet forces requesting a vote. The tone has diminished somewhat as new laws allowing municipalities of certain sizes in dry counties to vote on legalized sales. In dry Clarke County, the municipalities of Grove Hill, Jackson and Thomasville all now permit alcohol sales. In dry Washington County, Chatom has sales.
