Southern folklore says bottles where hung on limbs in trees so that evil spirits would go into them and be trapped. Once trapped, the bottles would be corked and thrown into a river to wash away the evil spirits. Today, we don’t put much stock into trapping evil spirits in bottles but custommade bottle trees decorate many yards. Bottle trees glistening in the sun are pretty sights around the South — and maybe elsewhere, too. And if they trap a few evil spirits, so much the better!
