Once again, Clarke County was fortunate to be bypassed by tornadoes that struck Alabama hard last Thursday, Jan. 12. As many as 14 tornadoes have been confirmed by the National Weather Service across the state that day. An EF-2 storm struck Selma just after noon causing considerable damage to residential areas and the central business district. Some injuries were reported but no fatalities. The tornado struck the Dallas County Jail, located off of Highway 14 to the east of downtown, damaging the roof. The jail normally houses about 180 inmates.
