Juneteenth celebrations were held around the country and in Clarke County this past weekend as the newest federal holiday was observed. Locally, the Clarke County NAACP chapter hosted a get-together in Toddtown Saturday, June 18. Juneteenth officially became a federal holiday last year. It was on June 19, 1865 that enslaved blacks in Galveston, Texas learned of their freedom even though it was years after the Emancipation Proclamation and months after the end of the Civil War.
