In this podcast episode, we discuss the growing reluctance to fully trust medical professionals, particularly in the realm of pediatrics. Shocking statistics reveal that 40% of school-age children grapple with chronic health conditions. Compounding the concerns, a significant 13% of teenagers are now relying on psychiatric medications. Join us as we sit down with Dr. Adrian Gaty, a practicing pediatrician based in Texas and a contributor to prominent platforms like the Federalist and his substack "Unofficial Pediatrics." Together, we explore whether modern pediatric care is influenced by compromised standards or remains rooted in independent medical practice.

Mental health apps are being introduced with the goal of addressing underdiagnosed and undertreated psychiatric disorders using AI technologies. Kooth U.S. and the Pennsylvania state Department of Human Services signed a $3 million grant to pilot a digital mental health platform in 30 school districts. The platform offers anonymous message boards, online chatting, a personalized library, and journaling options for students in grades 6 to 12. However, concerns have been raised regarding the potential risks of children communicating with unknown Kooth team members on the platform without parental consent.

Gretchen LeFever Watson, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist whose research and intervention projects have received international scholarly and media attention, including appearances on TV and radio programs. Dr. Watson was among the first to document drug overtreatment for ADHD in the U.S. and to demonstrate that disruptive conduct can be successfully reduced through school wide behavioral interventions. In her paper, she chronicles the personal and professional attacks she experienced as a result of challenging industry interests. This serves as a testament to the potential hindrance of pioneering research and the adverse effects it can have.

Many of us are familiar with the placebo effect, a beneficial effect produced due to the patient’s belief in that treatment. Psychological factors like mindsets and expectations have a connection to our physiology. It’s been proven in multiple clinical studies and researchers continue to explore more about the mind-body link.
On today's podcast we discuss beliefs, mindsets and the placebo effect.

Who determines the truth? Despite resistance from physicians fearing government overreach, California’s Medical Misinformation Bill AB-2098 was passed in the state senate and enrolled on September 1, 2022. This bill now sits on the desk of Governor Newsom for veto or signature into law. If signed into law, discussing the risk vs. reward of Covid treatments with patients could be labeled “misinformation” and put physicians at risk of losing their medical license.
On today’s podcast we debate truths and the role of the scientific method.

For the last two months we have had a number of insightful conversations on psychiatric medications and harm caused by the overprescription of drugs. A good way to close out those episodes is to reshare one of our very first episodes to simply answer the question, “Do antidepressants even work?” Originally published in July of 2021.
When a product is launched in a particular category we expect it to satisfy an unmet consumer need or perform as intended. Shampoo, caffeinated coffee, or running shoes. If the product doesn’t work, it won’t sell.
How often are we scrutinizing our use of pharmaceuticals? Instead, we rely upon the recommendations of our healthcare providers. What if those drugs don’t work? And, what if the established guidelines for standard of care are flawed. On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss the efficacy of antidepressants and the subjective process used by doctors to apply the label of “depressed” on us all.

Why did we begin to interpret common childhood and adolescent behaviors as symptoms?
The United States has utilized the school environment to determine what is normal or abnormal behavior, leading to subjectivity and bias. Close to 10% of children have been drugged and labeled with Attention-Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder.
Such an important topic needs to be discussed in greater detail. Today we continue our conversation on ADHD.

Mass Shootings are, for the most part, an American phenomenon. Why? Since 2014, mass shootings in the United States have increased 157%. Many groups are advocating for change, which we can all agree is necessary. Identifying the root cause is where we have a lot of debate and are often left asking more questions.
On today’s podcast we discuss the role of mental health in mass shootings.

The world is moving fast. The global pandemic forced many industries to accelerate their digital transformation forward in order to survive. And the mental health system is no different. The need for mental health services forced clients to become comfortable with telehealth services, direct-to-consumer apps or simply into an already overwhelmed and often dubious system. A system that soon probably won’t look like the system that exists today.

Can therapy be harmful? The belief that “just talking” leads to change is a common misconception. For many, it’s their behaviors in life that contribute to a pattern of negativity. Pop culture and film have characterized sociopaths, or psychopaths, as manipulative murderers and criminals. Individuals like that surely exist, but portrayals are based upon those in the news or incarcerated criminals. But who are the people that lie and manipulate to gain power without physically harming?

During the early 1900’s, the United States went through a period of rapid expansion establishing a free public school system. Educators believed that higher levels of education would improve citizenship and produce the managerial and professional leadership needed for modernization.
The structure of education migrated towards a top-down hierarchy, with age based classrooms and a curriculum designed to meet societal needs. Critics describe this structure as a “factory model school” designed to teach obedience in preparation for a life spent working in factories.
Here we are in the year 2022. The United States is primarily a service based economy with many avenues for entrepreneurial exploration. And how has the public school system adapted? By pursuing a policy of “No Child Left Behind” that established standardized exams in math and language to determine federal funding. The unintended consequence of this approach is a curriculum designed to simply take the test.
Does the environment of the public school system limit individual thought, new ideas and innovation?
On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss the Public School System.

Throughout history there are examples of communities, regions and even entire countries acting irrationally towards a perceived adversary. And sometimes that “adversary” is not a physical presence, but simply an idea, or the threat of an occurrence.
Examples such as the Salem Witch Trials, the Dancing Mania, and Nazi Germany often leave us asking the question, “How did this happen?”
The phenomenon of Mass Formation Psychosis has been applied as a possible explanation.
In September 2021, a professor of clinical psychology at Ghent University in Belgium suggested Mass Formation as a possible explanation for the global response around the Covid pandemic.
At the start of January 2022, Dr. Robert Malone shared this topic on the Joe Rogan Podcast, effectively becoming the most memorable part of their 3 hour conversation. Thus the need for more education on this psychological phenomenon.
On today’s podcast Roger, Kelly and Sean discuss Mass Formation Psychosis.

“Winning isn’t everything; it’s the only thing,” Coach Vince Lombardi said.
But that is not true when it comes to youth sports. Whether it is team sports or individual, those failures along the way help shape us. With the right coaches and parenting, those moments of struggle and loss can really build character.
As a parent, we must avoid the “parent trap” where we live out our goals through our children. Instead we must focus on the process over the outcome. And that can be hard, especially when dealing with adolescents.

The longer you practice as a therapist does not correlate with improved outcomes.
Time is not enough. To improve, you need to work at it. This is true in sports, music and yes, as a clinician working in mental health.
