For those familiar with Christian scripture, the Annunciation is an oft-heard story around Christmastime. The angel Gabriel appears to Mary and lets her know that she will give birth to the son of God. She is surprised and nervous, but by the end of their brief conversation, she declares, “I am the servant of Adonai; may it happen to me as you have said” (Luke 1:38). When I have heard this story discussed, the emphasis is often Mary’s “yes” – which is indeed an essential piece of the story – but I think we skip too quickly over Mary’s fear...
