The Baseball Boys vs. The Zombie Robots

It was a typical Saturday morning for the boys of the travelbaseball team, the Diamondbacks. They were excited to hit the road and head totheir out-of-town tournament. The sun was shining, and the boys were in highspirits as they loaded up the bus.

As they traveled down the highway, the coach, Coach Wilson,gave the boys a pep talk. He reminded them that they were a team and that theyneeded to have each other's backs both on and off the field. The boys allnodded in agreement, eager to show the other teams what they were made of.

But as they neared the tournament, something strange beganto happen. The sky turned dark, and the air grew thick with a strange fog. Thebus slowed to a stop, and the boys all looked out the windows in confusion.

That's when they saw them. The zombie robots.

The Diamondbacks had heard rumors of these robots, but theyhad never seen them before. The robots were large, menacing machines withglowing red eyes and sharp metal claws. They were headed straight for thebaseball field where the tournament was being held.

The coach knew what he had to do. He turned to the boys andsaid, "Boys, we need to help. We can't let those robots ruin thetournament for everyone else. We need to use our baseball skills to fight themoff."

The boys all nodded in agreement. They were scared, but theyknew they had to do their part.

They unloaded from the bus and ran towards the baseballfield. The robots were already there, wreaking havoc and terrorizing the otherteams. The Diamondbacks knew they had to act fast.

The robots were fast, but the boys were faster. They usedtheir baseball skills to dodge the robots' attacks and hit them with baseballs.The robots were tough, but the boys were tougher. They used their teamwork anddetermination to fight off the robots one by one.

But then, disaster struck. Coach Wilson had been takenhostage by one of the robots. The boys knew they had to act fast to save theircoach.

They used their baseball skills to distract the robot andget close enough to free Coach Wilson. It was a risky move, but the boys weredetermined. They worked together to free their coach and defeat the last of therobots.

Exhausted but triumphant, the Diamondbacks looked around atthe destruction they had caused. The field was in shambles, and the other teamswere shaken but unharmed. The boys knew they had saved the day.

But they also knew they had a game to play. They quickly gotback on the bus and headed to the field where they were scheduled to play theirfirst game.

The other teams were amazed at what the Diamondbacks haddone.

They had heard rumors of the zombie robots but had neverbelieved them to be real. The Diamondbacks had proved them wrong.

The boys took the field, still in their baseball uniformsbut covered in dirt and sweat. They played harder than they ever had before,fueled by the adrenaline of their earlier battle. They won their first game,and then their second, and then their third.

The Diamondbacks had become champions both on and off thefield. They had fought against evil and won, all while still making it in timefor their first game.

And as they headed back home, exhausted but proud, they knewthey had become more than just a baseball team. They had become a team ofheroes.

I'll start by saying that I'm a HUGE fan of superhero stories.

I've devoured countless comic books and watched every superhero movie and TV show I can find.

So, when I first heard about "The Boys," I was definitely intrigued.

Little did I know that I was about to embark on one of the most exciting and daring TV experiences in recent memory.

"The Boys" is a breath of fresh air in the world of superhero content.

It takes the classic superhero tropes and flips them on their heads, painting a picture of a world where superheroes aren't always the paragons of virtue and justice we've come to expect.

Instead, they're deeply flawed individuals who grapple with the immense power they wield, sometimes with catastrophic results.

The story revolves around a group of vigilantes called "The Boys" who are hell-bent on exposing the corrupt and dangerous superheroes, known as "The Seven," who have been abusing their power behind the scenes.

The show is based on the comic book series by Garth Ennis and Darick Robertson, and it masterfully adapts the source material's gritty, subversive tone.

What I love most about "The Boys" is how it humanizes both the heroes and the vigilantes.

The characters are complex and layered, each with their own motivations and backstories that make them feel relatable and real.

The show doesn't shy away from exploring the darker aspects of their personalities, making it a character-driven drama as much as it is a superhero action show.

The performances are top-notch, with Karl Urban stealing the show as the gruff and ruthless Billy Butcher.

KNIGHT SHIFT – A Gnome’s Tale

Once upon a time, in a far-off land, there was a gnome named Belcher.

He was unlike any other gnome in the land.

Belcher was a fierce warrior with a burly beard and a love for adventure.

One day, he was squired to a knight named Sir Reginald, who was known for his bravery and gallantry.

Belcher and Sir Reginald were tasked with hunting down a ferocious dragon that was causing chaos in the nearby villages.

They set out on their journey, with Sir Reginald leading the way, and Belcher following close behind.

As they trekked through the forest, Belcher noticed that Sir Reginald seemed more interested in boasting about his past conquests than actually fighting the dragon.

But Belcher wasn't too worried.

He knew he was more than capable of taking down the beast himself.

Eventually, they reached the dragon's lair.

Sir Reginald drew his sword and prepared to charge, but Belcher pushed him aside and said, "I've got this."

And with that, he charged into battle.

Belcher fought bravely, dodging flames and slashing at the dragon with his sword.

Sir Reginald just stood back and watched, looking quite impressed.

But the real hero was Belcher, who landed the final blow and slayed the dragon.

When they returned to the kingdom, the people cheered and praised Sir Reginald for his bravery.

He basked in the glory, soaking up all of the attention.

But Belcher knew the truth.

He had done all of the work and fighting, and Sir Reginald had just stood by and watched.

So, he decided to play a little prank on Sir Reginald.

The next time they were in front of a large crowd, Belcher stepped forward and said, "I'd just like to take a moment to give credit where credit is due. Sir Reginald was absolutely brilliant in this battle. He managed to keep his eyes open the whole time, and he didn't trip over any rocks. It was really quite impressive."

Sir Reginald looked confused, but the crowd laughed and cheered.

Belcher had outsmarted him and made him look like a fool.

From that day forward, Sir Reginald was known as the knight who didn't do much, and Belcher became a legend in his own right.

And so, Belcher and Sir Reginald continued on their adventures, with Belcher doing all of the work and fighting, and Sir Reginald getting all of the credit.

But that was okay with Belcher.

He knew the truth, and that was all that mattered to him.

Sometimes, you have to sift through a lot of chatter to find that golden nugget that lets you know you’ve struck the motherlode.

By that I mean eighteen books of awesome.

Like Kyla Stone.

I ate up her 7 book series on EMP.

Gave up book 3 on the nuclear one.

It just felt… familiar.

And yet, I dropped back into Lee Child and chowed down on Killing Floor, Gone Tomorrow, The Sentinel and Blue Moon all in just a week.

This might be my third time through.

Then when the dogs wouldn’t let me sleep, I popped over to SCYFY and caught Harry Potter’s Prisoner of Azkaban for the “so high I can’t count” showing and watched it through.

It made me want to dive back into the series again, even though I just read it back in December.

Why do we do that?

Why do we revisit some familiar tales only to not enjoy other “felt like I read it before” stories?

Maybe it’s comfort. Maybe it’s nostalgia.

Or someone told me once that the reason we love old stories revisited is because we are not the same person we were when we read them the first time.

A literary twist on it’s not you, it’s me.

I have to deal with the fact that I’m some folks Kyla Stone, and some others Lee Child.

Which could apply to a lot of situations in life.

And if you are like me, who likes you sometimes depends on the day.

Even down to the hour.

I wish I could advise you not to care, but it is a lesson I am constantly working on.

The whole, I don’t give a flip attitude is a good one to foster.

Because in the grand schemes, opinions do not matter.

There are too many variables.

I interviewed this week to be a Marketing Director at a Trucking Company.

They seemed impressed despite the lack of certified credentials on my resume.

I also got a rejection email from a call center where I applied to be a customer service agent.

They said they were looking for a different kind of candidate.

I have over twelve years of call center experience all the way to bottom level management.

Which told me one thing.

Nobody knows nothing.

Everyone thinks they know, but they don’t.

Some kid sees I graduated in the 90’s and thinks old.

Some guy five years older than me sees me as a peer who has spent five years retraining in a new skill set.

Perspective.

Are they both right?

Who knows.

Does it matter?

Nope.

Sometimes I wish it did, but man plans and God laughs.

Lady luck and the universe don’t give a flip who wins the race.

Sometimes it goes to the bold.

Sometimes it goes to the gifted.

Unless you’re on a date with me.

It’s the thought that counts.

I’ve long been an advocate of giving gifts.

Not so good at getting them though.

I am at a point in my life where minimalism should take over.

I think everyone should reach that stage of life where it’s more about clearing out and cleaning up than getting more.

Check your closets.

Check your drawers.

Where are you going to put it all?

My grandfather was a pack rat.

Part of his depression era mentality growing up with almost never enough.

His philosophy was to keep it all, just in case you might need it.

And when he died, my uncle, aunt and father rented a long dumpster and threw it all away.

A lifetime of news clippings and records and notes and almost eighty years of history tossed in a trash can and hauled off to a landfill.

One of the things they ran across that I thought was neat?

A clipping of me in my teenage modeling debut.

I worked after school at a department store downtown called Cohen’s and they ran weekly ads in the Pine Bluff Commercial.

At one point, I was recruited to show off the new Spring line up of blazers and Duckheads, and my picture went into an ad.

My papaw clipped it and tucked it into a treasure box and never told anyone about it.

Only discovered after he was gone.

And tossed in the trash.

Maybe some future archeologist will uncover it and make up a tale about it, putting clues together from sifted garbage.

I do not want to put that on my kids.

Not the tales of their father being turned legend by an Indiana Jones born five hundred years from today, but cleaning out my closet.

So I try to get rid of stuff.

Donate. Sell. Sometimes trash.

The plan is to go out of the world much like I came into it, screaming, naked and soaking wet.

Fifty years from now, so I have time.

Which is, in itself, sometimes a problem.

Because of Hallmark.

Long ago, I decided to give my children “experiences” instead of “Stuff.”

And I wanted more of the same.

Except

10, the ten year old, likes to give too.

He got me a coffee mug for my birthday last year.

He knew I liked The Mandalorian and picked one up.

I use it every day, and I see him notice me using it.

For Valentine’s Day, he got me an Office Mug.

And he will see me use it every day.

I won’t tell him about getting rid of two older mugs in the cabinet, to make room for the one new one.

Those weren’t gifts from him anyway.

But I thought his thought was well done.

Because a gift that can be used, and re used and used again is akin to an experience.

Hell, pouring the dark nectar of the gods into a gift every day might even be considered an experience.

And that’s a thought that makes me smile.

I hope you find a reason to smile today.

I have a love affair with older houses.

Victorian era homes (late 1800’s) hold a special place in my heart, along with a few shotgun houses from the 1920’s and 30’s that were repurposed into my homes growing up.

There’s a house in Pine Bluff called the Knox House. It looks like a dollhouse, painted pink and sculpted arches, a turret and a second story porch that runs the length of the house.

It’s falling apart now despite being on the National Register of Historic Places.

It’s on 6th street, next to a liquor store, a dilapidated commercial building built out of concrete blocks and across from a warehouse.

At some point in the past (70’s), 6th Avenue was bordered by homes.

They’re all gone now, replaced by well meaning business owners thinking of progress, thinking of cheap land and bring business back to the area.

It’s happening again today.

A hedge fund manager from Boston found Pine Bluff when he was looking for a place to build cheap fuel pellets made from Pine trees.

The city also has Opportunity Zones, which means capital gains made from one investment can be reinvested for tax purposes into it and hedge funds can make or keep more money.

He found another mansion on the country club side of town and bought it to minimize his tax gains.

It just moves the focus from one side of the railroad tracks to another, shifting money and investing away from areas with blight to places where the houses are older, but still nice.

I thought about this as I drove through a neighborhood on Saturday.

It was another long day of playing Santa’s little helper, and we hit a section of Sherwood that used to be a forest ridge.

Developers had come in and clear cut the forest, scraped out roads and were working on a hundred and something brand new homes that looked just like each other.

The sign at the entrance showed each lot was sold, marked with little red letters.

People moving out of Little Rock to get away from high crime areas and blight.

I bet this story plays out across the country, town after little town.

The numbers show it’s happening. Rural towns are dying slow deaths, and suburbs are expanding.

I can’t remember it not happening.

It makes me sad to think of some of the grand old houses that could be restored to glory, but the cost is high.

Or the empty weed covered lots that could use an influx of new homes.

I don’t really blame developers, though they are an easy target. It’s a cost measure. It’s cheaper to clear cut and build tract homes than it is to do infill homes.

I blame politicians and city councils. They make dumb decisions because they have no sense of the past.

And I see it play out on the truck I’m on.

The driver complains, makes a suggestion on how to improve his route, how to be more efficient, and the supervisor chalks it up to just bitching.

The City Council can brush off citizen complaints about blight and infill as just bitching, even though the problem is real.

Real in that neighborhood, and not necessarily where the politician lives.

How much do we brush off as just complaints when it could be an actual viable suggestion?
