Sometimes we entrap ourselves with rules and regulations. Our legislative leaders create laws to guide our behavior in society, but there are always unforeseen consequences that require new laws or changes to the ones that were previously enacted. This is why we have ongoing legislative sessions which constantly churn out new laws in local, state, and federal legislative bodies. If the laws were perfect, they would never need to change, but that hasn’t been our experience. The laws change because we find that the principles which the laws are based upon, such as fairness and liberty, are not always being achieved.

This week we will be reflecting on the principles Jesus points us toward when he is challenged by a scribe. The scribe asked Jesus to identify the most important commandment from God, and Jesus responded with two similar answers, “Hear, O Israel: the Lord our God, the Lord is one; you shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, and with all your soul, and with all your mind, and with all your strength,” and “You shall love your neighbor as yourself.” Jesus explains that these commandments most clearly point to the principles behind all the other laws and sayings from the prophets.
