As a therapist I have only one rule: you are not allowed to die. On this podcast I will answer questions about therapy, mental health, coaching, or anything else folks want to pick my brain about. I bring 20 years and over 1000 clients worth of experience and hopefully some humor.
In this episode we talk about Father's Day and how it feels for those (like Mariska) who do not have a relationship with their father. We also discuss the back door benefits of hating your body and how that can "protect" you from taking risks.
At the end you get a plug for my group starting 8/4/24 for parents of juniors and seniors entering the college process:

Mariska and I talk to Dr. Masha Hojat-Khoshniyat of Heal and Thrive Psychotherapy and Coaching https://www.heal-thrive.com
She talks about how her experience immigrating from Iran, becoming a therapist, and working with populations from abused children to inmates in the correctional system led her to feel like something was missing in helping people to heal. That something turned out to be a deeper dive into the clients past pain that they can often only get through psychotherapy. Mariska and I are big believers that psychotherapy is an incredibly valuable tool for some people that is really misunderstood in todays push for quick answers.
Dr. Masa also wants to bring attention to the fight for basic human rights currently being suppressed in Iran. In addition, her most crucial message is that there is hope for everyone. Even really "successful" people who are feeling less fulfilled than they could be can find help in therapy and if other modalities have not unlocked what you are looking for it might be time for psychotherapy.

This week Mariska and I explore the ideas behind personality inventories like Myers Briggs (I'm and ENFP according to Truity) and Enneagrams (I'm an 8). In this show I begin by endorsing Brene Brown's Atlas of the Heart series on HBO Max. Then I lament how I hesitate to share it more broadly out of fear of being labeled as "woke" or an SJW (social justice warrior), which is a shame as we should embrace being an ally and not be afraid to share it. Then I dive into the dilemma of mixed signals from friends and how to respond to them. Mariska chimes in with some passive aggressive paw licking to shame you into rating and reviewing.

Some friendships are so strong they need a different name. I have never seen men have one so I associate them most with women. In this episode I explore some things I encourage clients to think about when they are trying to determine if a relationship can be improved or if we should leave and move on. I made this episode immediately after listening to the Unread podcast by Chris Stedman. You can find it on apple podcasts, I heart radio, or on Spotify. This is a 4 episode podcast where the creator shares his story of getting an email from a good friend after his friend has died by suicide. Included in an audio file are some of his friend's conversations with a woman called Alice, who may or may not be Britney Spears. This podcast is powerful and intense and it made me physically uncomfortable and gave me all the feelings. I felt it was incredibly well done and I encourage you to listen to it but be warned that it will take you on an emotional journey.
