I don't know why I read everything, but I did. I'm exhausted at the moment, my brain wasn't even thinking about what to exorcise or edit, it just saw words and verbalised them. What do you think of having literally all the stats in there as well as the fluff? On the one hand, its completionist, on the other, is that even a good thing in this case?

The current stars of the 40K show make their earlier mark here, a great set of jaws swallowing the galaxy from beneath. Interesting to note that so much of the current storyline is being pulled from this far back, with heavy emphasis being placed on the Octavius sector here as well. It was the setting at the launch of the most recent edition of Kill Team and a major one in ninth edition 40K, with it's own secondary objective: retrieve octavius data.

The Ultramarines are mostly Roman-themed (from modern-day Italy) and Chaplain Ortan Cassius has a mostly knackered face, so that's where I was going with that voice.

Greetings, listeners.
A key component of the Warhammer 40,000 universe, and indeed the grimdark genre it spawned, is horror. As a massive fan of Warhammer 40,000 (obviously) and the horror genre, and given that it's Halloween, I couldn't resist spinning a scary story myself. So often the focus of horror in 40K fiction is, justifiably, the Warp and its spawn. Part of this story comes from a desire to add a little weight to another end of the balance.
A large part of the inspiration for this story came from the song Virtuous Tragedy by the brilliant musician Aram Zero. I love their music and this is my favourite. As I sat in front of Google Docs, I put this song on repeat and let its power overwhelm me. It's this overwhelming power, a sense of something awe-inspiring yet terrifying, which dictated what I typed. I reached out to Aram and they very kindly have allowed me to use their track in this Halloween special. I'm grateful Aram let this episode to come full circle and include the very music that inspired it.

Reports of my death have been greatly exaggerated. Hey, at least it's not such a gargantuan break as last time, is it?Seriously though, thank you very much for sticking with Oldex. I didn't realise it had been a month, I thought it was more like two weeks. For the last couple of months my depression has really battered me. It's been hard to do the bare minimum when it comes to audiobook narration and voice acting that actually pays me. Doing this passion project on top was asking too much of myself.One of those months was also spent narrating a 17+ hour audiobook for my other podcast, which is over 100 hours work. 1 hour of professional level audio, like Oldex, takes about 6 hours to do, so it was a significant chunk of my time. Thus, I appreciate you understanding why there's been a gap in episodes. I have as a result, however, improved my mastering process, so now its sounds even better!Oldex is back.Like my readings of GW literature? Honestly, there's longer fiction in this codex, it's just all later on. Certainly nothing like the fiction contained in the later 3rd ed. Codex Necrons though. Still, it gives examples of flavourful regiments beyond the big main ones that have their own doctrines these days.

I've gone ahead and started to title these. They're not the official titles, just ones I think appropriate. I don't mean to impede on the writer's original story, or put my stamp on it (even though I am, really), it's just because I think it's going to be easier for you to know which stories you have or haven't listened to this way, rather than trying to remember if you've listened to 'page 10a' or 'page 10b'.
This is a really human piece of Imperial Guard life that sets them apart from all the other factions in the universe. With some tweaks this could easily be a letter from a real-world war.

I thought Storm Troopers, now called Tempestus Scions, coming from the Schola Progenium was a relatively modern thing, perhaps brought in with the Scions replacing the Storm Troopers in...I want to say 6th edition?
I also thought the Kasrkin style of Storm Troopers came in 4th edition or later, but having just looked them up in this codex, the picture next to their entry is that of the Kasrkin. The guys I own in berets must've been 2nd edition boys! Despite being very static, 2-piece monopose they still hold up rather well.

I had a choice between 3rd edition Imperial Guard or Space Marine codexes and listener Tom favoured the Astra Militarum. It's a wise choice; after the otherworldly and Lovecraftian weirdness of the Necrons this most human and relatable of factions will make the perfect counterpoint.
If anyone knows who the fictions within this codex were specifically written by, please let me know so I can credit the correct author.
The last codex stories were selected in an order to fit in around my work - sometimes I just didn't have time to record, proof, edit and master a 20 minute episode. In hindsight though, a story emerged through all the pieces from Codex Necrons 3rd edition, and I'm going to go back and put them in the right order when I have time.
It's with that in mind I'm going to create and release all the stories from Codex Imperial Guard 3rd edition, should the same happen again. And if not, at least it will be like reading through the whole book in order.

Happily, it all comes back around. My first Oldex adaptation was a Graham McNeill story, which felt appropriate given the help he gave me in attributing the authors to the correct stories. Its for the same reason it feels fitting that this last story from Codex Necrons 3rd ed. is one of his as well.

Did they pick this storyline up elsewhere? A schism in the Adeptus Mechanicus caused by a necron worshipping sect?
A great piece in 3rd. ed. Codex Necrons, both in terms of presentation and the possibilities it opens. You don't get many characters in these stories as the fiction is so short, so it's nice to be able to do three separate characters in one piece.
There's part where the interrogating Ad Mech cyborg says "is" twice in a row. I think it's a typo, but I've included it and played it off as the character having a momentary glitch.

One of the things I love about necrons is how they take inspiration from great Earth mysteries, thus suggesting that they were responsible for them millenia ago.
In this piece by Phil Kelly he links the necrons to the Orion correlation theory of the real pyramid complex of Giza, as well as those pyramids near perfect alignment with the cardinel compass points.

I love hearing from the voices that aren't represented on the tabletop. Went with a West Country accent as: A) It gives the character a salty seadog feel.

I wanted to give the rogue trader a northern accent because:
A) that the outdated societal associations with accents we hold today don't necessarily hold true in the far future.
B) I love doing a northern accent. I didn't like my native accent when I was little and deliberately worked to not have it. Nowadays though, thanks a lot of Sean Bean, Game of Thrones and learning about the working class struggles and resiliance of my home county, I have discovered a love for the accent I once shunned. Y

Welcome to this first installment of Oldex, in which I adapt the wonderful fiction from out of print Warhammer 40,000 codexes and other rules books into audio stories.
First things first: thank you ever so much to Graham McNeill, the very author of this and so many other stories I grew up reading.
Graham took the time to tell me the specific authors of the individual pieces in 3rd edition Codex Necrons after I sent him photos of them all from my own copy.
As you may know, codexes generally only give a list of authors at the start and do not attribute which piece of fiction was written by who.
As I'm adapting individual pieces I felt it only right to try and credit the specific author of a piece, rather than say 'it's either the work of Andy Chambers, Pete Haines, Graham McNeill, Phil Kelly or Andy Hoare.'
Thank you Mr. McNeill, I feel honoured you have taken the time to help me, and it's a testament to your character that you made the effort for someone you don't know from Jack.

Since, thanks to Graham, I have all the authors for the Codex Necrons 3rd ed. fiction, this first phase of Oldex will be focused on that book, and I am glad that the opening story in the codex is by Mr. McNeill, as I wanted the first video on this channel to be one of his.
Why Necrons? I'm a necron boy at heart. I love all the other factions - I also have Space Marine, Genestealer Cult and Imperial Guard forces.
As someone with a couple of chronic health issues who has been let down by people in power, however, I relate to their story of being horrendously ill and raging at those who are in a position, but refuse, to help or betray them. There is something awesome and inspiring about enslaving the very gods that tried to devour you. I probably have an unusual view of the necrons though, don't I?
