As soon as Jesus was baptized, he went up out of the water. At that moment heaven was opened, and he saw the Spirit of God descending like a dove and alighting on him. And a voice from heaven said, ‘This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.’ MATTHEW 3:16–17 (NIV)

THE BIRTH OF OUR SAVIOUR KING - Through the eyes of Matthew
Infinite, and an infant. Eternal, and yet born of a woman. Almighty, and yet hanging on a woman’s breast. Supporting a universe, and yet needing to be carried in a mother’s arms. King of angels, and yet the reputed son of Joseph. Heir of all things, and yet the carpenter’s despised son. CHARLES SPURGEON
Our Saviour King came into this world not riding on a horse, surrounded by an army, wearing armour or crowned with a golden crown.
No, our Saviour came into the world as a baby, unexpected, unannounced and unexceptionally. Our mighty deliverer, was born of a unwed virgin teenager. Our warrior King, spent His early life as a refugee in Egypt. Our Lord and teacher, was hunted and opposed throughout His life, then tortured and slain for us sinful and broken people; yet He loved us enough to endure death on a cross so we could have eternal life.
We pray that, as we spend this next week reflecting on the meaning of the birth of Jesus Christ, you’ll be reminded that Christmas isn’t just an event in history to be remembered.
The birth of our Saviour was part of a much larger narrative… an event in history that led to a cross and us receiving forgiveness, grace, mercy and eternal life with our King. An event that changed the world but started cradled in the arms of a virgin mother.
