And I heard a loud voice from the throne saying, ‘Look! God’s dwelling place is now among the people, and he will dwell with them. They will be his people, and God himself will be with them and be their God. ’He will wipe every tear from their eyes. There will be no more death’ or mourning or crying or pain, for the old order of things has passed away. REVELATION 21:3–4 (NIV)

BACK TO BASICS: HEAVEN AND EARTH

The resurrection completes the inauguration of God’s kingdom… It is the decisive event demonstrating that God’s kingdom really has been launched on earth as it is in heaven. - NT Wright

As children, many of us had ideas of heaven. Maybe yours was that it was up in the clouds, maybe that it was one big party where you could drink and eat whatever you wanted, or perhaps it was all about the pearly gates for you, or the loved ones that were now in heaven watching over you. The similarity between all these ideas is that heaven was a place that was separate or different from earth.

However, as we’ll discover through this week’s readings, heaven is in fact near. So near that sometimes we catch a glimpse of what it will be like when Jesus returns. When we get to be with our Saviour King for eternity, oh how precious that day will be.
