These twelve Jesus sent out with the following instructions: ’Do not go among the Gentiles or enter any town of the Samaritans. Go rather to the lost sheep of Israel. As you go, proclaim this message: ‘The kingdom of heaven has come near.’ Heal the sick, raise the dead, cleanse those who have leprosy, drive out demons. Freely you have received; freely give. MATTHEW 10:5-8 (NIV)

BACK TO BASICS: HEAVEN AND EARTH
The resurrection completes the inauguration of God’s kingdom… It is the decisive event demonstrating that God’s kingdom really has been launched on earth as it is in heaven. - NT Wright
As children, many of us had ideas of heaven. Maybe yours was that it was up in the clouds, maybe that it was one big party where you could drink and eat whatever you wanted, or perhaps it was all about the pearly gates for you, or the loved ones that were now in heaven watching over you. The similarity between all these ideas is that heaven was a place that was separate or different from earth.
However, as we’ll discover through this week’s readings, heaven is in fact near. So near that sometimes we catch a glimpse of what it will be like when Jesus returns. When we get to be with our Saviour King for eternity, oh how precious that day will be.
