Time Vampires

Proactive vs Reactive Communication

Reactive Communication

  • What is Reactive Communication
  • When people have a direct line of communication with you and can reach you at any time.
  • Examples: Phone Calls, Emails, Text, Voice Mail, Messaging Apps, Social Media …. etc.
  • These communication methods eat up you time throughout your day.
  • When people do have direct communication with you, they do pleasantries: Examples: How is your day? What are you doing this weekend?
  • You need to create distance between who and how you communicate.
  • Reactive communication is nothing more than letting people steal time out of your day.
  • They are called “Time Vampires” and they do not value your time.
  • “Time Vampires” wreak havoc on your daily productivity.

Proactive Communication

  • What is Proactive Communication?
  • It is when you put some communication distance between you and your “Time Vampires”
  • It is a set of rules in conjunction with one communication method that will free up your time.
  • You have to be disciplined to take back you time.
  • Here are some rules and communication methods:
  • Pick a communication method and stick to it: Like “Voxer”, “Emails”, “Texts”, “Phone Calls”
  • I like the “Voxer” app. Here are some that are similar: Telegram, WhatsApp, Telegram X, Zello, aTalk, Bettergram Messenger, Talkie. Just google Voxer alternatives.
  • Pick 2-time frames within a day that you will communicate with people. Example: 7:00am to 7:30am and 4:00pm to 4:30pm
  • Do not vary from the time frame.
  • Start out slow. Pick one small group of people and apply this principle.
  • As people get use to this communication, add more group in.
  • You make the rules so you can make the exceptions. Just make sure you only have one or two of them.
