Recorded for http://Documentally.net and #AudioMo

This year marks the 18th consecutive gathering at the grave of George Orwell in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire. It all began weeks before the 2007 financial crisis. A small meeting between myself and Dr John Perivolaris, when with Orwell's writings and enduring influence in mind, we asked questions and discussed threatened freedoms.

And now, here in 2024 at the brink of another global slowdown, amidst social and economic inequalities, protracted conflicts and mass protests, this annual pilgrimage continues and we meet again.

Through the years, this informal picnic has discussed government and corporate mass surveillance programmes, restrictions on the right to protest as well as the continued erosion of online privacy.

Orwell stood for decency and kindness. He called out injustice and institutional corruption. And our presence does the same. This picnic is a political act - but it's also a meeting of minds and a gathering of friends who are committed to uphold the values of decency, kindness, and resistance to tyranny.

Throughout these last 18 years, this humble pilgrimage has evolved into an important tradition. It serves as a reminder that Orwell's message remains as vital today as it was decades ago.

Through this symposium, Orwell's legacy is kept alive and his call to resist dystopian tendencies in society continues to inspire a new generation of thinkers and change-makers.

Sat in an Oxfordshire graveyard, we find inspiration and community in our shared values of decency, justice, and resistance.

Visitors have come from around the world. As well as just down the road. You never know who'll turn up. One year we got to meet an elderly man who'd been there on the very day George Orwell was buried. And on more than one occasion we've had a reading from Orwell's son Richard.

Everyone is welcome to this annual gathering - to reflect, to discuss, and to leave empowered with the knowledge that there are fellow travellers committed to heeding that call.

So, bring a blanket, a picnic, and an open mind. This is a meeting of the curious, where we break bread, swap stories, and forge new connections.

June the 25th, 11am onwards, I'll be sat behind The Church of All Saints in Sutton Courtenay, Oxfordshire, OX14 4AE

What are you doing on June 25th? I'll be at a picnic and you are more than welcome.

George Orwell, renowned author and social critic, remains exceptionally relevant in our modern world. His life and writings offer us profound insights into power dynamics, government control, surveillance, and the manipulation of information.

Orwell's works, particularly "1984" and including "Animal Farm," provide crucial warnings and reflections on the perils of authoritarianism and the erosion of individual freedoms.

Despite being written 73 years ago Orwell's "1984," depicts a pervasive surveillance state not dissimilar to our own era of government surveillance and mass data collection. And we continue to have concerns about the balance between security and privacy.

More relevant than ever is Orwell's concept of "Newspeak", reflected in the manipulation and distortion of language for political purposes in our current age of misinformation, fake news, and the weaponisation of social media.

His exploration of thought control and the suppression of dissenting voices is still a cautionary in societies where democracy and freedom are under threat.

Here in the UK, in the midst of political spin and the use of vague and manipulative language, it's as if no one read Orwell's "Politics and the English Language", with it's call for clarity and honesty.

I recently re-read "Animal Farm," where Orwell highlights social inequality, exploitation, and the abuse of power.
Themes still resonant in societies grappling with a rich poor divide, social injustice, and systemic oppression.

So, as the work of George Orwell aka Eric Arthur Blair serves as an enduring reminder of the need for vigilance, critical thinking, and the protection of our individual liberties, we should continue to question authority, challenge propaganda, and defend the values that underpin a just and open society.

All that said, at its heart, the 1984 Symposium is simply a picnic with friends. People who attend for a variety of reasons. Tribute and remembrance, curiosity, activism, community building, and the desire to remind ourselves and others of Orwell's ideas in the pursuit of a more informed, just, and democratic society.

This year will be the 17th consecutive picnic and will coincide with the official gathering of the Orwell Society.

If you fancy coming along, bring a packed lunch, a drink and something to sit on.

11am Behind The Church of All Saints, The Green, Sutton Courtenay,

Recorded for my weekly email delivered from Documentally.net
I was cycling past a village record store and suddenly remembered it was Record Store Day. As I entered, I was welcomed with free beer and sunshine.
A few minutes later a band started playing some wonderful dream pop folk.
It felt like summer had arrived. They were called Lost Chimes and their set was one long and lovely sigh. I was blissfully lost in it all.
Music expresses what can’t be said and is one of the most beautiful vehicles for story. And these two do it so well.
The audio above is a chat I grabbed with Gemma and Nicky Kirk as they packed up.
I will assume you have already found their music on Band Camp. Their previous band Hunt Us is also there.
Lost Chimes have new album on the way and while you wait for that, i’ll leave you with their beautiful cover of Joy Division’s, “Love will tear us apart”.
Thanks for listening.

The guy sat in the car with me is my Dad, Roger Payne. He lives in Wales and I don't get to see him or the mountains nearly enough.

We got together recently and while sat in the car and I took out my recording gear.

As far as I remember I've never sat down to record a conversation with my Dad. He is in his 70's but you would never guess it. Still climbing mountains he's also spent the last few years renovating an old farmhouse and building a business with his wife Lesley.

They make duvet's out of wool. An amazing type of duvet called a Baavet. The business was successful before the dragons on Dragons Den offered to invest. And it still is after my Dad turned down their offer.

Listen to the audio and then if you feel inspired go visit their site. If you are quick you may just catch the end of a sale.

My Grandmother has dementia. She recently developed a pronounced tremor in her hands so I took her to the doctors.

I thought it could be her blood sugars.

The doctor thought it was probably stress and anxiety brought on by the recent death of her Brother.

He prescribed smiling and laughter. Something we could all use more of.

My Grandmother occasionally forgets her husband, daughter and four siblings are dead.

Her Brother just gone was 20 years younger than her, the youngest of five. She was the oldest.

Now she is the last.
