ADHD and Addiction can go hand in hand- especially if you are undiagnosed for ADHD. The impulsivity, novelty-seeking, poor judgment and risk-taking traits overlap between ADHD and addiction. Also, since ADHD leads to lower self-esteem... well addiction can swoop in and fill the void there if your ADHD is not treated.
So what do you do to help prevent addiction in your life:
1) Treat your ADHD- therapy, exercise, medications... these are all things that help and yes your read and heard that right... MEDICATION can help an ADHDer from having addiction issues in life. (Listen for more information)
2) Parents- talk to your kids about their ADHD and help them own it... and then talk to them about substance abuse or other addiction sources (internet, food, shopping, gambling, etc.)
3) Remember to HALT every day: Avoid Hunger, Anger, Loneliness, and Tiredness
