Empathy

Leadership is about empathy. It is about having the ability to relate to and connect with people for the purpose of inspiring and empowering their lives.—OPRAH WINFREY

How to develop empathy:

  1. Cultivate curiosity—ask questions of and learn from people you don’t know well
  2. Step out of your comfort zone—feel the anxiety & stress of new
  3. Receive feedback—use active listening skills
  4. Examine your biases—what do you believe and how do you judge others for not being like you (ego/assumption)
  5. Walk in the shoes of others
  6. Learn to have difficult, respectful conversations
  7. Join a shared cause (you didn’t create)
  8. Read widely—find fiction and non fiction stories of others struggles and how they overcame them

“Be kind and compassionate to one another, forgiving each other, just as in Christ God forgave you.” —Ephesians 4:32 NIV
