Hi everyone, we are back with another episode of our podcast allowing you to get to know people working behind the scenes of the crypto industry. Today we are joined by Halborn co-founder and CISO Steven Walbroehl. Before starting Halborn, Steven worked for Fortune 500 companies spanning various sectors including financial services, hospitality, insurance, and more.
Welcome to the 141st episode of the Inside Crypto Podcast. This episode was recorded on April 5th, 2023. Steven fills us in on some of the big security exploits in crypto along with one that could have brought down Dogecoin. We talk about best practices and solutions to some common problems many crypto projects have.
Thanks, everyone for listening, and don’t forget to tune in next week when we interview Caria Wei, CEO of Nuvo.
Topics Covered Today:
We have to start with the Rabies exploit that you published earlier in March. That was absolutely huge and I don’t think I ever heard about it. Do you want to explain to our audience what that is about?
Why were you contracted to review Dogecoin’s open-source database? Do these top 100 projects regularly reach out to Halborn to do such evaluations?
Could you also explain why these vulnerabilities could comprise a lot of other protocols?
Is this the downside of crypto being so open and transparent, would these vulnerabilities still exist in a closed system?
Taking a step back and looking at security broadly, as someone who has seen a lot, what do you encourage users to do to stay safe?
What about from a protocol level? What should projects be doing to keep themselves and users safe? Are we ever going to get to a place where we have a handful of incidents a year?
One of the common questions I got from our audience was the belief that audits don’t matter. Protocols brandish these audits on their sites but still get exploited. How would you respond to that?
Lastly, I always like to talk about the future, how do you see security and Halborn evolving over the next year?
