One of the most fundamental and basic teachings of the christian faith is that of our sinfulness as people. Without a correct understanding of this, Christ ceases to be God saving his chosen people and more of a feel good, "Jesus loves you and approves of everything you do" type of approach to the faith. We cannot have this.
