In this episode of The ITAM Executive Jesse Good and Brooke Hirsch, from Anglepoint’s Client Experience team, discuss the recent release of the 2024 Gartner Voice of the Customer report for Software Asset Management (SAM) Managed Services.

This is the first ever report of its kind for the SAM Managed Services industry. Unlike the Magic Quadrant, which relies heavily on analysis from Gartner analysts, the Voice of the Customer (VOC) report is solely based on client feedback, providing an unfiltered look at SAM service providers.

In the episode, Jesse and Brooke cover the methodology used to create the VOC report, which ranks providers based on client reviews in two key areas:
* Interest and adoption: review volume, industry, region, company size * Overall experience: ratings on support, services, and capabilities

Anglepoint ranks above average in both categories, earning the ‘Customers’ Choice’ title and positioning in the report’s upper right quadrant.

We are grateful to our clients and appreciate their feedback, which helps us continue to improve. If you would like to review Anglepoint, you can at Gartner Peer Insights.

Host: Kris Johnson, Anglepoint Chief Product Officer
Speakers: Rich Toomey, Lead Consultant; Alan Legerlotz, Principal Consultant

Episode Overview

In this episode of The ITAM Executive, Kris Johnson, Chief Product Officer at Anglepoint, hosts a discussion with Rich Toomey and Alan Legerlotz, two seasoned IT Asset Management professionals. What You’ll Learn

This episode provides a comprehensive discussion on the challenges of integrating various ITAM tools, specifically ServiceNow and Flexera, into a company's ecosystem. Some of the main points touched upon include:
1. Integration Realities: Salespeople often oversell the seamlessness of integrating various tools with ITAM platforms. In reality, the data, such as purchase orders, rarely include all the necessary details for automatic normalization of entitlements, requiring significant manual effort. 2. CMDB (Configuration Management Database) Health: The state of an organization’s CMDB significantly impacts the success of ITAM technology implementations. Customizations can create problems when aligning with the Common Services Data Model (CSDM). 3. Data Quality Issues: Inconsistencies in data between various sources (Flexera, ServiceNow, etc.) and manual updates to the CMDB can lead to significant discrepancies, requiring constant governance and reconciliation. 4. Governance and Maintenance: ITAM processes need continuous governance, including regular health checks of the CMDB, catching discrepancies before they become large-scale issues, and preventing the same errors from recurring. 5. Long-term Strategy: The right ITAM tool today may not be the best one in the future. Businesses should remain flexible and evolve their toolsets as their needs change.

Throughout the episode, both Rich and Alan stress that purchasing and deploying ITAM tools is only the beginning—real success comes from ongoing management, monitoring, and a clear focus on desired outcomes, whether it’s cost optimization, risk mitigation, or something else entirely.

Hosts: Chris Nielson and Ryan Krueger, Anglepoint Directors of Client Success

This episode of The ITAM Executive was created from Anglepoint’s Software Asset Management (SAM) 101 lighting course.

In this episode, Chris Nielson and Ryan Krueger, both Directors at Anglepoint, cover the foundational elements of software entitlement, software consumption, software license management, and give an overview of each step in the software asset lifecycle.

Sofware entitlement is a crucial part of software asset management. This is understanding what you own – it refers to the rights and permissions associated with using the software. While it may sound simple, measuring software entitlement can be incredibly challenging, especially in complex organization structures. Some of the biggest challenges include knowing the various metrics used to measure entitlement, understanding the different version and editions, and having a firm grasp on appropriate environment use rights.

After entitlement comes license consumption management. This is knowing what software is being used. The goal of license consumption management is to ensure compliance and provide accurate and complete data through discover and inventory processes.

These software license management processes, amongst others, are essential to ensure that your organization gets a maximum return on software investment over the course of the asset’s lifecycle. Ryan and Chris cover each phase of that lifecycle in detail in the episode.

By listening to this episode of The ITAM Executive, you will learn:
* What software entitlement is and how to appropriately measure it * The importance of license consumption management and an effective license position (ELP) * The phases of the software asset lifecycle, from request to disposal * And more

Speaker: Blake DeShaw, Security Manager at Anglepoint
As the world becomes more connected, digital security is paramount—not simply for maintaining positive customer relations but for global security and safety. This is one of, if not the most important parts of a robust ITAM & Security strategy. However, the task has never been more monumental. Not only do your organization’s tens of thousands of networked devices need to be tracked, but even employees’ personal devices, such as their phones and personal computers, need to be taken into consideration.
Protecting information from cyber-attacks is so crucial that extensive Executive Orders are in place to guide what companies are accountable for. Executive Order 14028: Improving the Nation’s Cybersecurity was a direct result of the Solar Winds incident, which was released in 2021. Based on this EO, Memorandum M2218: Enhancing the Security of the Software Supply Chain through Secure Software Development Practices was also recently released. Listen in as Blake helps dive into what this means for your organization.

The triggers you need to keep an eye on
Importance of accurate data, inventories, and usage
How to reduce and mitigate security exposures

Building an ITAM program from the ground up is a daunting task for any organization. That’s the exact situation our guest, Evan Vafidis, found himself in just five years ago. Evan is the Head of License Management at Uniper, which has thousands of employees and facilities dispersed across 40 countries.
Unknowingly, Evan “volunteered” to establish an ITAM program at Uniper after being frustrated with the lack of accuracy and transparency their license management data was providing. Fast forward to today, reports that used to take six months to generate now take six minutes. Listen as Evan shares his strategic approach to that tectonic shift in data reliability and efficiency.

The technologies utilized in business are an ever-moving target when pursuing competitive advantage. As technology evolves, so does the way it’s managed. With the shift from on-prem to the cloud, software sprawl or decentralization within organizations is more rampant than ever. In this episode, long-time SaaS expert Lance Giles can empathize with teams and departments who are simply seeking solutions to make their work more productive. However, there are constructive ways to manage the wild, wild west of the www.
SaaS providers have intentionally made software solutions easier for businesses to purchase. With a few clicks and a credit card, a company's spending can unintentionally skyrocket—something Lance feels is more disconcerting than an audit. Regardless of industry pivots, the overarching goal of an IT Asset Manager is the same: pay for what you use.
We discuss:
Core philosophies and strategies for managing SaaS
Managing risk on both sides of the ledger
Shifting your mindset from deployment to finance
Normalizing the raw spend details to have visibility
Building relationships that drive business outcomes
Quantifying assets to simplify decision making

This episode of The ITAM Executive podcast is an excerpt from a webinar hosted by Anglepoint and Converge. View the complete webinar here: https://www.anglepoint.com/blog/software-asset-management-strategic-benefits/
As noted by Gartner, SAM is a discipline that supports strategic business development. Here are the 4 main strategic benefits of SAM:
Reduce Risk
Data collected from SAM allows organizations to identify IT security risks, finding faulty and/or unsupported software. You’ll know which/how many software assets need patches/security updates.
SAM reduces compliance exposure. When auditors come knocking, they’ll find that you are paying for what’s being used; eliminating the need for potential hefty, business-changing fines.
The reduced risk from practicing good SAM will save your organization from any and all potential legal, financial, and reputational damages/liabilities.

Reduce Spend
This is a major benefit! Many of our clients see actionable savings of 20% or more in year one.
Good SAM monitors usage on an ongoing basis, allowing you to identify re-harvesting/re-use opportunities. It’s (obviously) important that you don’t spend more money that needed.
Ongoing usage monitoring also empowers organizations to purchase software assets based on their true usage and future needs. - Additionally, SAM helps limit rogue purchases and potential chargebacks.

Maximize Investments
Through configuration management & standardization and change control & business continuity, organizations get the most out of what they have.
Take advantage of IT optimization opportunities, i.e., virtualization, server consolidation, etc.
Having the right people and processes in place allows you to realize the full benefits of your SAM tool(s). Many organizations fail to take full advantage of this.

Negotiate Strategically
If you know exactly what you have and exactly what you need, you can negotiate from a position of power. This gives you confidence and makes life much easier.
SAM data allows for dialed-in and precise decision making.
Having a SAM managed service provider in your corner gives you the publisher-specific expertise needed to negotiate. This detailed publisher knowledge allows for focus on key contract asks and advantageous terms.

The open-source nature of Java has made it ubiquitous throughout the software industry. Since Oracle’s acquisition of the tech roughly 10 years ago, most of Java’s features remained free. Near the end of 2018, however, that began to change as Oracle began charging for nearly all use cases.
What started as simple “soft audits” in 2019 have evolved into full-blown audits. What does this mean for your organization? In this episode of The ITAM Executive, we discuss the ramifications of these changes with Anglepoint’s own, Scott Jensen, Sr. Manager & Oracle Practice Lead.
We discuss:
What Java audits look like and how to prepare
Calculating the financial impact of these changes for your org
When you do and don’t need to pay for Java licensing
How to save millions through SAM managed services
